Emer Neville
Emer Neville is a young Irish activist and Uachtarán (President)[1] of the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU).
Activism
Born in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Emer got involved in activism in 2017 when she was elected as a Clonmel representative[2] on Tipperary Comhairle na nÓg. Following this, Emer became involved in the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU), being elected to the Regional Officer Body[3] as one of two Tipperary Regional Officers.
In November 2020, Emer brought her work to a national level, having been selected as one of eight young people from more than a thousand applicants to partake in the Ombudsman for Children 'Child Talks'.[4] Emer delivered a speech, broadcast on RTÉ News Now, titled 'Article 13', addressing the nation on Article 13 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Freedom of Expression.
Following this, in May 2020, Emer was elected to the National Student Executive of the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU) as the union's Communications Officer.[5]
During her term, Emer overhauled the ISSU website, working with the Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Katie Halpin Hill, to translate the website into Irish.[6]
In May 2021, Emer was elected as the Uachtarán (President) of the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU), taking office on July 10th, 2021.[7]
As of June 2021, Emer is also serving as Co-Chairperson of Tipperary Comhairle na nÓg alongside Kaitlyn Ryan[8] and holds a seat on the Ombudsman for Childrens Youth Advisory Panel (YAP).[9] Emer is often found locally discussing youth-relevant issues on behalf of her peers.[10]
Leaving Certificate 2021
In 2021, Emer served as a catalyst for change with regards to the difficulties facing Irish students completing the Leaving Certificate in 2021. Emer represented students in numerous media outlets, voicing the opinions of students following the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU) 2021 State Exams Survey.[11][12][13][14][15]
In April 2021, Emer worked alongside the Department of Education and the Department of Health to interview the Irish Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ronan Glynn, on behalf of Irish students about the reopening of schools following the Covid-19 pandemic.[16] Following this, Emer was invited to interview public health consultants, Dr Abigail Collins and Dr Kevin Kelleher to discuss best practice for Leaving Certificate students in adhering to Covid safety measures. [17]
