The Emerald Cup is a yearly, two-day event that occurs at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California. The festival centers around cannabis, with a focus on promoting sun-grown, organically-produced marijuana that has been sourced from California. The event is multifaceted; it holds multiple cannabis-based competitions,[3] hosts musical performances and speakers,[4] and acts as a marketplace for buyers and sellers.[5]
History[edit]
The event began in 2003 when a group of cannabis cultivators from the Emerald Triangle gathered at grower Tim Blake's residence, named "Area 101",[6] to compare their marijuana harvests for the year.[7] The idea of the event was "to advance the concept of sustainable and organic cultivation through competition between the finest sun-grown organic cannabis", according to an Emerald Cup press release.[8]
The initial gathering attracted approximately 200 attendees,[9] but has grown to host more than 20,000 attendees in recent years.[10][11]
Contest[edit]
The Emerald Cup runs multiple cannabis-related contests for California-based growers to submit their products into. The contests focus on different types of cannabis, and promote the event's environmentally-conscious views. A few of these competitions include the Best Eco Conscious Packaging, the Regenerative Farm Award, the Best Hemp Derived CBD Topical.[12]
Entertainment[edit]
Every year, The Emerald Cup organizes live music performances from a variety of genres. Notable acts from recent years include Gogol Bordello, Big Gigantic, STS9, The Roots, Dirty Heads, and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley.[13][14][15]
The event also hosts speakers, panels, and discussions. Topics of these exhibits typically focus on cannabis-related themes, such as sustainable growth practices, social and legal cannabis statuses, and medicinal implications of cannabis.[16] Experts from a diverse assortment of industries participate in these conversations. Significant past contributors include Lori Ajax, Chief of the California Bureau of Cannabis Control;[17] Filmmaker and actor Kevin Smith and actor Jason Mewes as Jay and Silent Bob;[18] and Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps executive David Bronner.[19]
