Emilio Bonfiglio is an Italian cultural historian and philologist of Late Antiquity, Byzantium, and the Caucasus, specialised in Patristics and Armenian Studies. He is currently a researcher at the University of Hamburg.

Biography

Bonfiglio holds an MPhil in Eastern Christian Studies and a DPhil in Oriental Studies from the University of Oxford (Pembroke College) and has been the recipient of two Calouste Gulbenkian Fellowships in Geneva and Istanbul, a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at Oxford, and a Byzantine Fellowship at Dumbarton Oaks.

He has published extensively on Armenia and the Armenians in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the reception of John Chrysostom in Arabic, Armenian, and Latin. In 2023, together with Claudia Rapp, he co-edited Armenia and Byzantium without Borders. Mobility, Interactions, Responses.

Bonfiglio is a member of the steering committee of the Association internationale des études arméniennes and the editorial team of the journal St. Nersess Theological Review. He is also a regular member of various academic societies, among which are the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS); the Verein zur Förderung der Christlichen Archäologie Österreichs; the Österreichische Byzantinische Gesellschaft (ÖBG); the Association pour l’étude de la littérature apocryphe chrétienne (AELAC); and the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL).
