Emily Darlington (born 1973) is a British politician, currently the Labour Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Milton Keynes Central,[1] formerly Milton Keynes South. She is also the Deputy Leader of Milton Keynes City Council Labour Group and Cabinet Member for Housing and Adults.[2]

Early life and career

Darlington was born in London. She grew up in South Wales, Germany, America, and Canada as her father, a Biochemistry Scientist moved around the world. She attended Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, studying a BA in Political Science and Public Affairs.

She began her career at Environment Canada, as a ministerial speechwriter working on issues such as acid rain and banning CFCs. She moved back to the UK in 2000. In 2001, she became Head of Media, Campaigns and Communications at the GMB - Britain’s General Union, where she worked for General Secretaries John Edmunds and Kevin Curran.[3]

In 2004 she became Special Adviser at the Department of Trade and Industry, working directly to the Science Minister and then the Secretary of State. In 2007, she moved with Chancellor Alistair Darling to HM Treasury where she advised on welfare reform, family and children policy including child poverty, personal tax and benefit reform, health, international development, devolution, university and skills, science and innovation.[3]

She worked at the Design Council and NESTA before founding her own company, Aequitas Consulting Ltd, in 2009. She went on to be Head of Strategy at the University Alliance and Head of Policy at New Philanthropy Capital.[3]

Political career

She was first elected to Milton Keynes Council in 2018 and was appointed as Cabinet Member for the Public Realm in 2019.

She was the Labour Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Milton Keynes North in 2015.[4] She did not seek selection in 2017, citing “family commitments”.[5]
