Research & Career[edit]

Hand's research interests directly relate to her course teachings. She currently focuses on the introduction of machine learning and artificial intelligence but has assisted undergraduate algorithms classes as a teaching assistant in the past. While holding a chair in the UMD Computer Science Graduate Organization, she facilitates 'Girls Who Code' which is a program dedicated to introducing and developing coding abilities for young females. Hand's held research positions/projects are:

(2017 - Present) Improve Faced Descriptions & Face Detections through
                    localizing facial attributes with semantic
                    segmentation
                    (Diffbot Inc., Mountain View, CA)
(2013 - Present) Improve Face Verification Properties on Unconstrained
Face Images using deep learning methods
(University of Mayland, College Park, MD)
(2015) Developing, Regularizing, and Facilitating the
                    Training of deep neural networks

(2014) Incorporated stereo data into Random Forest
                   classification of geologic types
(NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA)
(2013/2014) Developed a Structure from Motion Framework Compatible
with other Localization Techniques for use of low-
resolution rover and high-resolution planetary images
with the Advanced Navigation subgroup of the
                   Intelligent Robotics Group

Education[edit]

After obtaining a Bachelor's Degree of Science (B.S.) in 'Computer Science and Engineering' and 'Applied Mathematics' at the University of Nevada, Reno, Emily Hand pursued a Masters of Science (M.S.) as well as a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her thesis, 'Beyond Identity: What Your Face Says About You', explores the materials and methods needed to construct "robust models for human describable features of faces."[1]
