Emma Camp (journalist)
Emma Camp is an American journalist and associate editor at Reason Magazine. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Slate, and more.[1][2][3][4] She is most well-known for her viral New York Times op-ed, "I Came to College Eager to Debate. I Found Self-Censorship Instead."
Early life and education
Camp is from Birmingham, Alabama.[5] She attended the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Scholar, where she was part of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society and studied English and philosophy.[6][5]
Career
In 2022, Camp published an op-ed in the New York Times titled "I Came to College Eager to Debate. I Found Self-Censorship Instead."[1] This piece highlighted concerns about free speech and self-censorship on college campuses and garnered significant attention, attracting commentary from both liberal and conservative audiences.[7][8][9][10] The article has since been featured as an example of cancel culture impacting conservative students.[11][12]
Since 2022, Camp has been working at Reason Magazine and has appeared on CNN's Smerconish, Making Money With Charles Payne on Fox Business, and Rising on Hill TV.[13][14] In 2024, Camp was included as one of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression's 25 Faces of Free Speech.[15]
