Emmanuel Etina Monono (1955 – 7 May 2026) was a Cameroonian traditional ruler who served as the Chief of Great Soppo in Buea, in the South West Region of Cameroon. He was a second-class traditional ruler and a member of the South West Regional House of Chiefs.[1][2]
Early life and education
Emmanuel Etina Monono was born in 1955 in Great Soppo, a locality in Buea, Cameroon.[3]
He began his primary education at Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) Great Soppo and later attended Presbyterian Secondary School Bessongabang in Manyu Division, where he obtained the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level.[4]
After completing his secondary education, he returned to Buea where he taught while pursuing his Advanced Level studies. In March 1973, he travelled to London, where he trained and worked in the field of nursing.[5]
Traditional leadership
Accession to the throne
Monono was enthroned as Chief of Great Soppo in June 1999, succeeding his predecessor and assuming leadership of one of the largest chiefdoms in Buea.[6]
Community development
During his reign, he implemented several social initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of his community. Notably, he established the "Palace Kitchen" in 1999, which provided food to vulnerable residents for approximately a decade.[7]
Under his leadership, Great Soppo experienced demographic and infrastructural growth. The population reportedly increased from about 16,000 inhabitants in 1999 to approximately 22,000 by 2020. Development efforts also contributed to the establishment of schools, health centres, pharmacies, and other institutions within the community.[8]
He also advocated for improved access to potable water through borehole projects in the area.[9]
Political and institutional roles
Regional governance
Monono was involved in regional governance as a representative of traditional rulers in the South West Region. He became a member of the South West Regional Assembly under the House of Chiefs.[10]
During the 2020 regional elections, he served as a leading figure among traditional rulers aligned with the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), advocating for decentralization and increased regional representation.[11]

As a member of the House of Chiefs, Monono contributed to discussions on regional development, governance, and the integration of traditional authority within Cameroon’s decentralized political system.[12]
Death
Emmanuel Etina Monono died on 7 May 2026 in Buea, Cameroon. His death was announced the same day and was widely described as a significant loss to the Great Soppo community and the South West Region. Traditional expressions indicated that he had "answered the ancestors' call", reflecting customary beliefs surrounding the passing of a traditional ruler.[13]
Legacy and influence
Monono is regarded as a community-oriented leader whose tenure was associated with social welfare initiatives and local development. His leadership contributed to the expansion of infrastructure and services in Great Soppo, as well as the strengthening of traditional authority within regional governance structures.[14]
