Emmanuel Franck Biya (born 21 August 1971 in Yaoundé, Cameroon), is a Cameroonian businessman and entrepreneur. He is the eldest son of the President of Cameroon, Paul Biya.[1]
Biography
Emmanuel Franck Biya received most of his education prior to high school in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He later pursued his studies at the University of Southern California (USC) where he completed a dual degree in economics and political science in 1994. After graduation, he worked as an intern at the Bank of Central African States (BEAC).[1]
In 1997, he became a partner of the forestry company I.N.G.F. In 2003, the company was under scrutiny for felling trees in areas outside the forest concession limits, an issue caused by poorly legislated tree-felling perimeters.[2] He left the company in 2004 and founded a private fund called Venture Capital plc which invests in companies in Africa and worldwide.[1] In 2005, when the government led the refinancing of the Cameroonian telecom company Camtel, Emmanuel Franck Biya bought Camtel debt securities and then sold them back at a profit in 2006 to the government.[3] Some NGOs accused him of speculating with public funds[4], but no court of law followed through with those accusations[5]
During the 2011 presidential elections in Cameroon, he often appeared in the political meetings of his father.[3] He was rumored to run for the 2018 presidential elections but did not.[6][7] He is once again rumored to be running for the 2025 elections, encouraged by a movement called “The citizen’s movement of Franckists for peace and unity in Cameroon”.[8]
Personal life
Emmanuel Franck Biya is the eldest son of Paul Biya and Jeanne Irène Biya, the late wife of the Cameroonian President. He is married and has four children.[1]
