Emmanuel Kamberov (born February 24, 1962) is a Bulgarian-American molecular biologist and inventor. He is the lead inventor of the PicoPLEX whole genome amplification technology, which is used in preimplantation genetic testing during in vitro fertilization (IVF).[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Kamberov was born in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, and grew up in Bansko. In 1991, he received a Ph.D. in microbiology from Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski", where he taught at the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology from 1988. In 1992, he moved to the United States.
Career
In 1992, Kamberov began a postdoctoral research fellowship at Wayne State University's Department of Biochemistry. In 1993, he moved to the University of Michigan, where he held postdoctoral positions in the Departments of Biological Chemistry and Internal Medicine Rheumatology, and at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.[4]
In 2001, he joined Rubicon Genomics as its first employee, later becoming vice president of research. Rubicon Genomics was acquired by Takara Bio USA Holdings in 2017.[5] After the acquisition, he served as senior director of research and development at Takara Bio USA until 2019.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kamberov led research and development for molecular tests at Lynx Dx and Rapid Biosense, both CLIA-certified testing laboratories in Michigan. In 2022, he joined Signal Bioscience.
PicoPLEX technology
Kamberov is the lead inventor of PicoPLEX, a whole genome amplification method for single cells.[1] The technology is used in preimplantation genetic testing to screen human embryos for copy number variants before IVF transfer. It is the core chemistry in commercial platforms including Illumina's VeriSeq and SurePLEX, and Thermo Fisher Scientific's ReproSeq.[2][3][6]
