Emmeline Minyi Kim (born 17 December 1990), known professionally as Gidget[1], is an American writer, director, comedian, actress, filmmaker, thinker, and mixed media artist. Born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania[2], she created the web series Yeoja.[3] She is best known for writing and directing Enigma of Being Awake[4] and Midnight Mayhem.[5]

Early Life[edit]

Emmeline Minyi Kim was born on December 17, 1990 in Dallas, Texas.[2] Her mother and father met in Austin, Texas. The only daughter of Korean immigrant artists, she grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated in 2008 from Friends Select School.[6] With with an IQ of 150 and help from her community, Kim transferred from public to private school on a special scholarship. She relocated to southern California to study filmmaking with honors[7] at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. In 2012, after graduation, she moved to San Francisco, California. While living in the bay area she began reporting for FourTwoNine and producing more videos for TeamBackpack.[6]

Career[edit]

During her freshman and sophomore years in college Kim helped form TeamBackpack.[8] Through the Hip hop platform she first discovered Duckwrth.[9] They maintained their creative relationship to produce later works. She met future collaborators Ania Catherine, Mishka Kornai[10], and Angela Dalberiste during her undergraduate years. She still regularly works with friends from her childhood and school days.

In 2014, Kim screened her short films at the British Film Institute's BFI Flare in London, England[11] and film festivals in Paris, Dublin, Edinburgh, Prague, Bologna, Seoul, and Los Angeles among other international cities.[12] After the premiere of her music video "Authentics" with Duckwrth on Okayplayer[13] the duo released another music video "Bernal Heights" on Revolt TV.[14] For "Authentics" Kim hand picked musician/actor JD McCrary to star as Young Duckwrth.[15] Kim later documented Anderson Paak's Malibu Tour through the eyes of Duckwrth, who was an opening act[16] alongside Pomo and Little Simz.

Pre-production for Enigma of Being Awake[4] started in 2015. The 53 minute independent featurette introduced stars SAMANIA[17] (Samira Mahboub and Ania Catherine).[18] Jesse Sullivan of American Satan[19] was among the cast.[20] The Kickstarter crowd funded film[21] premiered in 2016.[22]

In 2017, Kim created Yeoja.[3] The comedy web series takes place in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York. The diverse cast of WOC highlight an array of cultures. The show specifically focuses on Asian American women and their web of friends living in the United States.

Personal life[edit]

Kim is a meditating agnostic.

She has given lectures at international universities and institutions such as Moore College, UC Riverside, Gachon University, and the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.

Because most of her grandparents escaped from North Korea during the Korean War she hopes that one day Korea will unite once more.
