Emmy Clarke (born Margaret Elizabeth Clarke;[1] September 25, 1991)[2] is an American former actress.

Early life and career[edit]

Born in Mineola, New York and raised, respectively, in Houston, Texas, Woking, England, New York City,[1] and, finally, the state of Connecticut,[3] Clarke–whose professional nickname is simply derived from the initials of her given names[1]–had never acted prior to appearing in the 2003 television film My House in Umbria,[3] a performance which earned her the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie – Supporting Young Actress in 2004.[4] Recalling her performance, director Richard Loncraine was particularly struck by Clarke's "stillness," specifically "her ability to look at the camera and not move and to just hold a look." He added, "It's unusual in many actors, let alone children of her age." No less impressed was the film's star, Dame Maggie Smith, who said simply, "It was stunning. Absolutely stunning."[3]

Clarke had a recurring role on the TV series Monk—beginning with the season three episode "Mr. Monk and the Red Herring"—as Julie Teeger, the daughter of Adrian Monk's second assistant Natalie.[5] Reviewing the program's 2005 Christmas episode, the Knoxville News Sentinel notes with approval the show's evolution, such that supporting players Ted Levine, Jason Gray-Stanford and Clarke "have been given breathing room to fill out, bringing much-needed dimension and quirkiness to Monk's world."[6] Clarke continued as a semi-regular cast member throughout the remainder of the show's run,[7] appearing in a total of 24 episodes.[1]

In 2006, 2010 and 2014, respectively, Clarke appeared in Fur, a substantially fictionalized biography of photographer Diane Arbus (in which Clarke portrays Arbus's eldest daughter),[8] The Line (aka ATF), a never-picked-up–and, it appears, never aired pilot episode for a planned ATF procedural starring Dylan Walsh,[9] and, finally, Apartment Troubles, a poorly received independent dramady about a young lesbian couple, both of whom also happen to be aspiring performance artists,[10] in which Clarke appears briefly as one of a pair of rival talent show auditioners.[11]

In a film populated by an international cast of experienced actors, HBO's 'My House in Umbria' is highlighted by a newcomer from Connecticut. Emmy Clarke, now 12, was selected from her American school in Surrey to play the 8-year-old Amy, traumatized by a terrorist bomb attack on an Italian train that kills her parents. 'She had never acted before,' director Richard Loncraine told reporters from London earlier this year. She's the daughter of American bankers living over here. Actually, she's just gone back to America now, back to Connecticut. 'What's remarkable about her was her stillness.
