Emotional undereating

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Emotional undereating (EUE) is a tendency for individuals to experience decreased appetite when distressed, and eat less food.[1] Despite being essentially opposite behaviors, EUE is correlated with emotional overeating.[1]

Causes

EUE behavior is believed to be formed in early childhood, and predominantly caused by environmental factors.[1][2] Sex and BMI have also been found to be predictors of developing EUE.[3]

A history of EUE is a risk factor for developing eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder.[4][3]

Assessment

EUE can be measured with the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, with studies demonstrating validity in both adult and adolescent populations.[3][5]
