Plot
This article needs an improved plot summary. |
Former Marine Dean Pusey returns to Indiana after four years of service in Iraq to live with his adoptive mother and pacifist stepfather. He works nights loading trucks at UPS, and spends time drinking with his childhood best friend, but is haunted by memories of combat and the ghost of Israel Ruiz, a fellow Marine who died after returning home. Dean struggles to adapt to civilian life, judging the complacency of his neighbours from whose ordinary routines he feels alienated. Stuck in a perpetual state of alert, he stages pretend battle exercises, unable to shed the habits of vigilance and violence drilled into him, scanning rooms for firing angles and threats. Ruiz appears in Dean's mind during these imaginary drills, mocking him and reminding him of moments they shared.
Dean meets Max, a young woman, in a bar, and they begin a relationship. Max becomes pregnant, and Dean confronts the prospect of fatherhood. He fears he cannot be a parent, yet he accompanies Max to medical appointments and later cares for their daughter, River. When Max leaves for a work conference, Dean is left alone with the baby. Exhausted and sleep-deprived, he teeters on the edge of collapse, his mind ricocheting with intrusive thoughts as he struggles to meet the demands of caring for an infant.
