Endless Sky is an open-source space trading and combat video game developed by Michael Zahniser for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux. The game was released in October 2015 and is inspired by and is similar in gameplay to the Escape Velocity series[1]. The game is only available for download via Steam or Github

The game was initially created entirely by one developer and has received updates over time expanding the game. Contributions toward the game's content can be made by players occasionally.[2] It is not fully finished though a large portion of the game has been completed. One main storyline is already finished with others being worked on and the addition of a player-made plug-in system is planned.[3][4]

Gameplay[edit]

A large portion of the game takes place within space, in which the player has a third-person overhead view. The player is able to interact with other ships, engage in combat, and land on various planets. Ships can fly through various star systems using hyperdrives, a form of faster-than-light travel, that requires one day per hyperspace jump. Star systems are connected to each other by starlanes, however some are connected via the use of wormholes. When the player lands on a planet, they can perform a number of activities, such as trading, buying ships and outfits for ships, and taking jobs.

The game takes place in the Milky Way Galaxy, starting in the year 3013. The player begins by obtaining a loan from the bank, in order to purchase their first ship. A small while after the player does various activities as an independent merchant, the main plot begins. An independence movement known as the Free Worlds attempts to separate from the Republic, and the player will usually join the Free Worlds. A number of alien species also exist in the game, some act aggressively toward the player.
