Early Life[edit]

Gage Humann, professionally known as Endyz or "prod.endyz", is a Canadian record and film producer born on September 30, 1997 in London, Ontario, Canada. Endyz is well known for his incredibly catchy Emo rap hooks, varying vocals, and different styles on various songs.[1]

Gage was raised in multiple environments due to his parents' divorce. Endyz recounts his birth father introducing him to Guns N' Roses and Neil Young and other rock music from birth. Endyz states that it is this juxtaposition with the rap and alternative music his stepfather listened to around him (including Eminem, Jay-Z and Len (band)) that created his signature sound which mixes the provocative themes of punk with the smooth yet industrious sounds of hip-hop.

Humann was a former member in Amabile Young Mens choir,[2] and studied Film in Television at Sheridan College.[3] Whilst in high school, Endyz was heavily engaged in extra curricular activities to combat the "boredom" of life. Endyz was a member of the Mens' Choir, the MAD Choir and the Young Mens Choir, and was Student Council President, president of the Chess team and a backup point guard on the basketball team. Humann is licensed by the London Alzheimer Society, and worked as a music therapist for patients with Alzheimers from 2014-2016. Endyz is expected to graduate in 2023 with a bachelors in Film and Television Studies from Sheridan College.

When younger, Humann would spend his weeks on his mother and step father's farm tending to the property while learning singing, dancing, acting and photography through local teachers and books. Humann would spend most weekends at his father's in downtown London, exploring rap music on his father's work computer and going to shows at Western University. He also began to upload short clips of himself and friends singing, performing stunts and skateboard tricks alongside song covers and play rehearsals to social media. [4]

Early Career[edit]

In late 2018, while studying at Sheridan, Humann noticed the vast amount of resources at his school and would have classmates, professors and peers get him studio time in the various recording booths between and after his classes. Bored with traditional music, Endyz would soon upload his first project under the name "NONE OF THAT" with long term collaborator Sam (also known as Gorestain).

Sam and Endyz met in 2013 while attending the same high school. "When I finished recording None of That, I knew I had to show Sam. When I was in school I would see her producing music during class, lunch--she was my best chance of creating my first independent project."

"Sam was excited to learn I had a new interest in Avant-garde music like her, and made 4 instrumental variations of None of That before finally uploading the final draft within 48 hours."

Endyz credits Sam for his music inspiration, his learning of electronic production and claims that he would just have been another kid with a dream without her help. "She showed me I can be myself without judgment, and feel comfortable performing the way I want to. That there is no REAL way to create art."

Soon after his first release of None Of That, Endyz began collaborating with local drummer and producer Will Devine (also known as wjd), photographer Jesse Hill, and experimental filmmaker James Ramal. Though they had both attended the same high school, Devine and Humann first met during a school trip to New York in their senior year. The two bonded over Mario Kart and 80s California gangster rap, and decided to stick together for the rest of the trip and explore the local music scene.

Devine and Humann re-united in 2018, while Devine was studying music at MetalWorks and Humann attended Sheridan. Devine would discuss his classes and notes with Endyz while they learned to produce music together. Endyz would refer to Will as his "honorary roommate" for several more years until they finally moved in together to pursue music full-time in late 2021. They would frequently visit other established and starting musicians around the city to learn about recording and mixing samples, drums and singers first hand.

During this time, Humann would start his film production company and compose commercial advertisements for several different local companies, and soon recruited Tom Labonte, another musical collaborator [2] and fellow Sheridan student, to join his film production team. Humann also began outfitting a studio in his home in late 2019 for him and his friends to record in.

In 2019, Endyz would collaborate with close friend Joey Neptune [3] to create their single "Highs & Lows", which was produced by Endyz. The two would continue to carve Endyz's signature upbeat emo rap sound with "Hate Me! [prod.endyz]" and "Dial Tone (Beep Beep Beep) [prod.wjd]", both of which were released in 2021. Joey unexpectedly passed later that year, and Endyz released their final collaboration in early January 2023 in Joey's memory.

Endyz would go on to find underground success for his emo rap debut "Lies ft. Lil Bon", which was added to Spotify's "Tear Drop" playlist between XXXtentacion and Juice Wrld.[4]

Soon after, "Contrast" by Endyz was highlighted on the Grooverelly Underground Rap YouTube page in 2021 [5], giving the song a large amount of underground exposure in the Hip hop, Rapping and Hyperpop communities.

In 2021, Endyz collaborated with idol David Shawty on "Pokéball", [6] which reached 20,000 streams on Spotify, [7] 2.1K on the WAKEUPVIOLET YouTube channel [8] and 7000 views on Soundcloud. The pair have two more projects: "Pretty Girls" and "Drugtown", both produced by wjd. [9]

Endyz has now accumulated a cult following of 30,000 monthly listeners on Spotify [10], 500 on Soundcloud [11], 3000 on instagram [12]. His newest release with Will Devine (wjd) [13] and Lead Astray [14] called "Left on Read" [15] reached over 100,000 unit streams with its first month. Endyz has accumulated over 2 million total streams on Spotify since 2018.

Endyz now lives in London with full-time collaborator wjd and several other musicians while they work on their debut EP and make connections with other musicians and performers in Ontario. They have also debuted the RARE CANDYZ YouTube channel together to highlight local artists, producers, music videos and live shows.

Musical style[edit]

Humann's music had been categorized as emo rap and rap rock. It includes elements of pop punk, SoundCloud rap and pop. Alternative Press called his music "genre-defying".

He has cited influences including Panic! at the Disco, Blink-182, Lil Peep, and Bobby Raps, stating that his goal was to appeal to both "the kids who listened to A$AP, XXXTentacion and Kanye, and the kids who listened to Black Veil Brides, Blood On The Dance Floor, and the Warped Tour kind of music". His music often merges trap instrumentals with autotuned and distorted vocals, using melodies reminiscent of pop punk and emo. Media outlets have described his sound as "Travis Scott meets Green Day": "It’s all mixed together and atomized, a fever dream of Adidas tracksuits and dreads and emo power ballads". Others have described the music as "mixing pop-punk attitude with the new genre of autotuned rap".

His music was cited as an influence by Dirtygotheen on their EP "ONLY FANZ", [16] and the JNasty release "Back again" ft Endyz. [17]

Per SteamLINE Music Blog: "The track is undoubtedly a soul-stirring song and composition that distinguishes itself with a unique soundscape that blurs the lines between genres. “Back Again” contains a masterful infusion of core elements of hip-hop with sub-genres of pop, including new age undertones.

It’s only fitting that such powerful lyrics would be embellished by a grandiose instrumental which features a booming trap bass drum and mellifluous acoustic guitar. This sonically appealing blend is capped off with an ethereal type of mystique driven by a ghostly string section or choral effect.

The vocal performance is exceptionally demonstrative and projects a heartfelt genuineness that is far from fabricated. It adds an extra dimension of appeal to the song, particularly, the skillful sound design which places a tastefully placed distortion effect on the vocals in just the right places which symbolizes an uncertainty of some sort. However, the hook of the song emphatically brings home the point." [18]
