Englischhausen

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Englischhausen is a residential English-immersion programme in Germany that brings together German learners and native English speakers for intensive language practice. Organised by the Munich-based company Englischhausen GmbH, the programme offers week-long “English-only” retreats held at hotels and conference venues across the country. German participants are paired with an equal number of native English speakers in a country-house or hotel setting, where all conversation and activities are conducted entirely in English. The format has been described by the German press as a form of “Sprachurlaub” or “language village” that provides intensive practice without leaving Germany.[1][2]

History

The programme was first reported on by the German press in 2011, when Süddeutsche Zeitung published an article describing early immersion-style courses under the title “Das englische Experiment.”[3] Further coverage followed in 2012, with reports in Stuttgarter Zeitung and Die Zeit detailing week-long residential courses in the Black Forest and describing the format as an English “language village.”[2][1] Since then, courses have been held at venues across Germany, including locations in Bavaria and Hesse.

Courses typically run for six days and include more than seventy hours of structured conversation. German participants and English-speaking volunteers rotate partners frequently for one-to-one sessions, group activities and presentations. Participants are expected to speak only English throughout the week, creating a full immersion environment.[1] The programme emphasises natural conversation and everyday communication, while also including some business-related discussions and scenarios relevant to participants’ professional lives.

Reception

Major German media outlets have reported positively on the approach, noting its intensity and social element. Die Zeit characterised the experience as “an English bath without leaving home,” while other papers have cited participants describing rapid improvements in speaking confidence.[1][4][5]
