English, ENG4U

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

English, ENG4U, (also known as English or Language), is a grade 12 English course offered in the Ontario Curriculum. The course covers topics in literacy, communication, critical, and creative thinking.

Course Code.[1]

The first character, E, describes that the course is in the English department.

The second and third characters, NG, describe the particular course that is being offered (English Language, as opposed to Media Studies, The Writer's Craft, etc.).

The fourth character, 4, represents the grade level of the course (fourth year of high school, or grade 12).

The fifth character, U, represents the course type (University Preparation Level).

Ontario courses will also have a sixth character, which corresponds to differences in course delivery. These are school-dependant, as different schools may choose to use different characters to represent different deliveries (for example, ENG4U1 might be a first semester course, ENG4UE might be an online course, ENG4U6 might be a gifted level course, ENG4U0 might be an AP course, etc.)

Requisites

The prerequisite for ENG4U is English, ENG3U (Grade 11 English), which must have been taken in advance of English, ENG4U[2]. Students may also opt to take English: Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices, NBE3U, as an alternative, which also satisfies the prerequisite for ENG4U[3].

All students in Ontario must take ENG4U, (or the equivalent College Preparation Level alternative, ENG4C, or the equivalent Workplace Preparation Alternative, ENG4E), as it is a compulsory course requirement for graduation and achieving the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)[4].

Most university programs in Ontario require ENG4U[5]
