Enigma: A Magical Mystery is an illustrated children's book by Graeme Base. The story is about a young badger named Bertie who likes to visit his grandfather, a retired magician known as Gadzooks the Great. One day, when Bertie is visiting the magicians' retirement home, Gadzooks tells Bertie that all the residents' props have gone missing. Though Bertie is unsuccessful in finding the missing props, Enigma, his grandfather's rabbit eventually reveals that he is the one who hid the props throughout the place for want of a chance in the spotlight. In the end, through, Bertie improvises for the missing props and the magic show goes on. By using the decoder at the back of the book, the reader can decipher the locations of the hidden props.
Awards
In 2009, Enigma was nominated for Book of the Year for Younger Children Australian Book Industry Awards.[1] It was also a finalist for Aurealis Award for Best Children’s (8–12 yrs) and Best Illustrated Work/Picture Book.[2]
Enigma was also nominated in 2010 by Speech Pathology Australia for Book of the Year and by Young Australian Best Book Award for Best Picture Book.
In 2011, it was shortlisted by REAL Children's Choice Awards.[3]
It received the Honour for Best Picture Book by Kids Own Australian Literature Awards in 2012.
