The series initially gained attention as a space shooter browser game, with the first game in the series being Enigmata created in 2009. Production[edit]

The Enigmata video game series was a solo-production by Roshan Gamage, with the first game in the series released for web browsers in 2009[3]. Enigmata (original) was a top-down space shooter game where the player takes control of a ship and destroys incoming enemies. This game was ported to popular browser gaming websites, such as Armor Games and Kongregate. Enigmata received a sequel, named Enigmata: Genu's Revenge, and was sponsored by Kongregate, and had over 1.6 million game plays. [6][7] Due to the increasing popularity of the tower defense genre, the developer created Enigmata: Stellar War, a prequel to the original Enigmata series. Production of the mobile version began soon after the release of the browser version. Gamage had created his own game engine for the browser which utilized CPU rendering for all graphics, which worked well for the web, but did not work well on mobile devices. He converted his game engine to work with Starling Framework, which also allowed higher resolution sprites and frame rates to 60 fps. Enigmata: Stellar War was released for Android and iOS in 2018.

Enigmata: Stellar War[edit]

Enigmata: Stellar war offered new gameplay mechanics in the Tower Defense genre. Unlike most tower defense games, you don't place your towers on predetermined spots, but you profit from free placement[3]. Enemy units can also come from any direction and have free movement. The game offers many different units and enemies with varying effects. One of the unique mechanics are evolutions, allowing units to take on a different form and become more powerful. [8]

The goal of Enigmata: Stellar War is to beat the main villain named Villalobos, which is only possible through a long journey through many sectors. The game story follows the three main protagonists, Genu, Neko, and Lyra, as they advance through the galaxy and come across opposition from the Allegiance which is run by Nikki and Villalobos [1].

Social Aspects[edit]

The development of the mobile port of Enigmata: Stellar War has been further improved by feedback received on the social platform, Discord_(software) Around the same time that the app was released on Android and iOS, developer, Roshan Gamage, had also opened a server to the public to discuss game ideas and general feedback on what everyone may desire as a feature. True to his word, Roshan Gamage has taken the feedback given to him and improved the game in many ways. The small community formed around the relaunch of the game on mobile as of April 2019, has grown to over 200 members. The development was also opened up for discussion on its forum.

Music[edit]

All the music for the game was created by Roshan Gamage's sister, Mia Lolita, who also produced the soundtrack for the original Adobe Flash version, and the soundtrack for the original Enigmata game. The songs were created independently of Enigmata: Stellar War, but the theme of her songs fit well with the game and eventually became the official soundtrack for the game [9].

Reception[edit]

In 2014 the game gained popularity, with over 2.7 million game plays[10][4]. The game has had favorable reviews from 4.5 to 5 out of 5 on Armor Games, Kongregate, iTunes App Store, and Google Play [4][5][11][10]. Enigmata: Stellar War ranked #9 for top Tower Defense games on Armor Games[12]. The game continued to be played by an active community of players, who have created their own wiki for the game.
