Enrique Segovia (born 29 August 1939) is a South African-born Spanish dancer.
Early life
Segovia was born Geoffrey Neiman in Johannesburg.[1] He began tap dancing at the age of 14 but soon moved to Spanish dancing, which he preferred. He began lessons with Reina Berman, as well as ballet classes with Ruth Inglestone.
Career
In 1957 Mercedes Molina opened a Spanish dancing studio and he soon joined as a pupil. He progressed quickly and soon became the lead dancer in the company, as well as Molina's partner. In 1959 Antonio toured South Africa and Segovia auditioned for his company.[1] After spending a year in Spain with Antonio's company, Segovia moved to the Luisillo Spanish Dance Theatre with whom he toured the world for the next five years. He returned to South Africa in 1965, becoming a co-director with Molina. Together they choreographed the ballet 'Carmen', which was aired on the first night of television in South Africa.[1] When the “Spanish Dance Society” was formed, Segovia was responsible for the compilation of the complete male syllabus, and this syllabus is now being taught in seventeen countries around the world. In 2000 he was awarded “La Cruz de Oficial de la Orden de Isabel la Catolica” by His Majesty Juan Carlos, King of Spain, for the furthering of Spanish Culture outside of Spain.[1] He is currently the artistic director of the Spanish Dance Society and an international examiner and teacher.[2]
