Enterprise Policy Generator (EPG for short) is a free web browser extension for Mozilla Firefox that assists administrators in creating configuration files for enterprise policies. The extension generates the policies.json file, which allows Firefox and Firefox ESR to be centrally configured on individual computers as well as across entire corporate networks. Unlike platform-dependent solutions such as Group Policy Objects (GPO) on Windows, the policies.json method can be used across platforms on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

The Enterprise Policy Generator is primarily aimed at system administrators in companies, government agencies, and educational institutions that use Firefox as their default browser and want to enforce uniform security, privacy, and user settings without allowing end users to change them. The extension is available as open-source software under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 and is offered on the official Mozilla add-ons platform.

    History

With Firefox 60 (2018), Mozilla introduced official Enterprise Policies to enable companies to centrally manage the browser. In parallel, Austrian web developer Sören Hentzschel (also known as the operator of camp-firefox.de) developed the Enterprise Policy Generator as a user-friendly alternative to manually creating the JSON file. This extension partially replaced the older CCK2 Wizard, which had become incompatible with Firefox Quantum (version 57).

Over the years, the number of supported policies has grown in parallel with the Mozilla policy templates. Version 8.0.0, released on April 1, 2026, represents the largest update to date. It is a complete rewrite of the backend, enabling a leaner architecture, improved maintainability, and faster adaptation to new Firefox policies. Older configurations from versions prior to 7.x are no longer importable; however, the developer offers a free conversion service.

    Features

This extension offers numerous features that minimize workload:

    • Intuitive user interface with filtering functionality (also searches policy names and descriptions).
    • Automatic input validation (e.g., URLs, wildcards, number ranges).
    • Drag-and-drop and full keyboard navigation for fields with multiple values (e.g., bookmark lists).
    • High accessibility: improved contrast, logical tab order, new shortcuts (Shift+F for filtering, Shift+G for generating).
    • Automatic height adjustment of text fields (e.g., for third-party policies).
    • Display of version requirements and additional information only when policies are enabled.
    • No data collection; explicit notification in the manifest.

Version 8.0 supports Firefox 140 and later (as well as the current ESR version). Newly added policies include AIControls (controlling AI functions), IPProtectionAvailable (disabling VPN integration), and ContentAnalysis (configuring data loss prevention solutions). Support for deprecated policies, such as the old Extensions object, has been removed, as ExtensionSettings is more comprehensive.

    Practical Application

The generated policies.json file is suitable for both individual computers and large networks. In enterprise environments, the file can be deployed via software distribution (e.g., SCCM, Intune, Ansible) or through central file shares. Typical use cases include:

Blocking access to about:config (BlockAboutConfig). Specifying homepages, bookmarks, and search engines (Homepage, ManagedBookmarks). Centralized extension management (ExtensionSettings). Enforcing security policies (e.g., TLS versions, cookie behavior, website filters).

Disabling telemetry and advertising recommendations (UserMessaging).

After restarting the browser, the settings take effect immediately and can be reviewed in about:policies.
