Episode 4889[1] is an episode of British soap opera Hollyoaks. The episode focuses on the time Peri Lomax spent on the streets while being homeless after being kicked out of her house by Leela Lomax. The episode aired on Channel 4 on 19 April 2018 but was aired the day before on sister channel E4. The episode covers a period of seventy one days since Peri left the village and started to sleep on the streets of Liverpool. During the episode she meets Dean and Harley and has to deal with the consequences of sleeping rough when the former perishes on the streets.

Production[edit]

Hollyoaks cast actress Mollie Lambert to portray homeless character Harley Frater for the homeless storyline that featured Peri on the street.[2] Of her casting Lambert said "I am so pleased to be introduced into the Hollyoaks family and looking forward to getting stuck in."[2]

Ruby O'Donnell said in an interview "Peri genuinely believes that she is unloved, unwanted and has no friends. She has always felt this way since she found out that Leela was actually her Mum and not her Sister. Since Leela has had Daniel Peri feels even more neglected than ever"[3] about how Peri became homeless. She went on to say "I was shocked at first and then really pleased that Hollyoaks had trusted me with such an important and relevant storyline. It has been one of the hardest things I have had to film but also the most rewarding" about getting the homeless storyline.[3]

It was announced that there was going to be an episode centred around Peri's homelessness storyline. It was also said that Hollyoaks were working with charities Centrepoint and The Whitechapel Centre to accurately portray the storyline.[4]

Synopsis[edit]

The episode begins with Peri Lomax (Ruby O'Donnell) crying for help on a street before flashing back to 71 days prior.

Peri is shown leaving Hollyoaks Village tossing her phone in a bin and ending up going to a bed and breakfast in Liverpool to stay where she is eventually kicked out two days later due to having no more money. Peri ends up getting a bed in a hostel where she received minor verbal abuse from one of the other women in the room she was having to share with. Peri tries asking a businessman for assistance in the hope of getting money when Dean (Alfie Kingsnorth) shows up and pulls her away from him because he speculates the man only wanted to have sex with Peri. Peri accuses Dean of being a drug addict and he walks away but she apologises and he takes her somewhere safe on the streets to stay. Dean introduces Peri to Harley Frater (Mollie Lambert) who is reluctant to have her around.

One of the following days, Peri, Harley and Dean go out to try and get some money but Dean lets Harley and Peri do it, when joggers throw stuff at them and yell abuse towards them. Harley explains to Peri now that she is homeless she is worthless now. During the nights Dean has been heavily coughing.

Days later, the tent that Dean, Harley and Peri were staying in is took over by other homeless people, when Dean tries getting it back he is punched by one of them so they end up retreating. After hitchhiking to a bus stop, Harley and Dean notice a missing poster that Leela Lomax (Kirsty Leigh Porter) put up in the hope of finding Peri. Harley and Dean come of the opinion that Peri has been lying to them the whole time when they also see that Leela is offering a reward to whomever finds Peri. Dean and Harley walk away from Peri.

Peri briefly returns to the village and sees Leela and Louis Loveday (Karl Collins) embracing each other outside the flat where they live. She then calls to find Dean. She is eventually reunited with Harley and Dean. Where days pass for them on the streets begging for money.

On Day 68, the rain has soaked the sleeping bag that Dean, Peri and Harley were sharing and then Harley decides to go to Hollyoaks to con the money out of Leela. Two days later Dean is getting worse and Harley returns with nothing from Leela. Harley makes an attempt at talking Peri into going home. Peri, Harley and Dean go to sleep but in the morning, Dean is already dead. And the episode ends how it began.
