Eric Takukam

Eric Takukam is a Cameroonian multidisciplinary visual artist.[1]. Regarded as one of the forerunners of digital art in Central Africa, his practice moves between crypto art and augmented reality[2]. His artistic research also extends to immersive installations and public sculptures[3]. He is best known as the originator of the artistic concept “Le Villadin” and the symbol “Le TromBhomme”. Promoter of an immersive showroom, where he displays some of his works in cryto arts and products from this brand “Froma”. He is also the initiator of the association “We are One”.

Biography

Childhood and Early Life

Eric Takukam was born and grew up in Bameka, Cameroon. He lived there until the age of 14. His interest in drawing emerged in the 1990s during his time at a Catholic school, inspired by observing his second-grade teacher sketching. After earning a BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma), he pursued studies in graphic design before working as an art director in a communications agency based in N'Djamena, Chad[4]. While employed, he continued to draw and produce artworks. Through exposure to advertising, he became deeply engaged with digital tools and developed his skills as a self-taught artist[5].

Career

With over a decade of experience as an art director in advertising, Takukam chose in 2020 to fully commit to his artistic practice[6]. He decided to devote himself exclusively to his work as an artist[7]. Working primarily with digital media and metal sculpture, he encountered significant challenges integrating into the Cameroonian art scene, where digital art was still largely misunderstood and stigmatized. During this period, he met curator Viviane Maghela, whose exchanges with him led to his first exhibition, Digital Spirit, held at the Annie Kadji Gallery in Douala[8]

The Villadin Concept

The Villadin represents a core element of Takukam’s artistic universe. Combining the notions of “village” and “urban resident,” the concept illustrates the tension and dialogue between African heritage and contemporary urban life. Through augmented reality and digital artworks, Takukam reinterprets Bamileke masks and symbols to narrate stories rooted in the African rural experience, imbued with poetic nostalgia.[3] The Villadin also mirrors the artist’s personal journey: originating from a village, he now expresses himself using the creative tools of the city[9] well known by the natives.

The TromBhomme

The TromBhomme is a universal emblem conceived by Takukam, inspired by a simple paperclip brought home by his son. Shaped from a single piece of wire forming two human-like extremities, it symbolizes unity, connection, and unconditional love among individuals. The TromBhomme serves as a metaphor for the interconnected nature of life and stands as a visual manifesto promoting neurodiversity and ecological awareness[10]. Through this symbol, Takukam promotes the acceptance of differences as a source of beauty and collective resilience.
