Erick Hercules (born 18 January 1992) is an Ecuadorian commercial photographer and a contributor to non-photoshop levitation photography.[1] His photographs have appeared on billboards in Times Square,[2] have been auctioned at the Guggenheim Museum,[3] and published in Hypebeast, High Snobiety, and other periodicals.[4][5][6][7] Erick has previously worked with fashion and streetwear companies including Nike, Converse, Swatch, FILA, Alpha Industries.[8]

In 2013, he began the “#WeLevitate” movement, a global community of aspiring levitation photographers and content creators that collaborates with World of Dance, SONY, Nike and other brands.[9]

In addition to his campaign work, Erick serves as an official SONY Alpha Ambassador and educator.[10] Erick launched Hercules New York in 2016, a creative agency and team that supports his vision and creative output.[11]

Early Life[edit]

Erick was born in Cuenca, Ecuador but moved to Queens, New York at an early age. He is the eldest of three children and is of Ecuadorian descent.[12]

Erick attended Fiorello H Laguardia High School for Music and Arts as well as the Aaron Copland School of Music as a Classical Voice Major.

After co-founding Herc 12 in the summer of 2012, he picked up a camera to do a photoshoot for what was then going to be Season 1 for the company and immediately fell in love with the art of photography.[13]

Career[edit]

Erick began his career by posting pictures of shoes, music, and buildings on Instagram. From there, he created a digital presence alongside other Instagram photographers such as Last Suspect and Humza Deas by going on adventures together throughout NYC.[14][15]

In 2013, Erick began "#WeLevitate" movement, a global community of photographers and content creators that regularly collaborates with World of Dance, SONY, Nike among other brands. Associated photographers and contributors to the levitation community include Koone, Rockadeezy, Demas, Connor Surdi, and Mathieu Forget.[16]

Additionally, he and his photographer peers developed a community around "#Puddlegrams" capturing reflections of subjects in puddles and posting their shots on Instagram.[17][18]

He has worked with a range of celebrities, artists, and companies such as American singer Johnny Mathis and American songwriter Jason Mraz to Mercedes Benz and SONY.[19]

As he developed his skill as a photographer, Erick became obsessed with the ability to defy gravity in his photography. Over time, he developed a technique of capturing subjects levitating without the use of Photoshop. Discussing his fascination with levitation photography, he said: "An image with movement...is an untold story told in one frame. What happened before? What will happen after? This piece of the story with a lack of beginning and end is what thrills me the most. It’s humbling to experience the thrill of telling a story with one frame. A story that has no beginning and no end.”[20]
