Erick da Luz Scherf (06 January 1998 - current), also known as Erick Scherf, is a Brazilian-born researcher and writer who specializes in critical inquiry in Social Work and Health Sciences, as well as human rights-based approaches in Health and Social Care Services.[1] He has authored or co-authored several publications across the Social Sciences,[2] including articles in high-impact journals in different academic disciplines, such as Frontiers in Public Health,[3] International Social Work,[4] and Journal of Human Rights and Social Work,[5] among many others.[6]

He has also been invited to serve as a reviewer on a number of publications, through which he provided his expert opinion to help Editors make a decision on whether or not to publish certain manuscripts.[7] Over the years, he has secured an amount of around 300 thousand US dollars (estimated currency conversion) in scholarships from several sources including the Brazilian Ministry of Education, the European Commission of the European Union, and the Graduate School of the University of Alabama.

He has communicated findings from his research in at least a dozen academic conferences in Brazil, Portugal, Norway, the United States, South Africa, and elsewhere.[8] Researchers and scientists all over the world have cited his works,[9] and he was one of the first authors in the Social Sciences to lead an international study on the socioeconomic and political implications of the mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil in 2020.[10]

As of late, he has been focusing on social work research, education, and practice, with a focus on decolonial methods and pedagogies, which includes Indigenous knowledge from Latin America,[11] and Critical Perspectives on Human Rights in social work practice.[12][13] He also focuses on racialized and minoritized individuals and communities.

Awards and accolades

  • Capstone Graduate Council Fellowship, awarded in April 2023 by the Graduate School of the University of Alabama.[14] The University of Alabama awards around 100 Graduate Council Fellowships every year. There are a number of different categories. However, only 15 Capstone Fellowships are awarded each year and they include five years of support for doctoral students. This is UA's most competitive fellowship at graduate level.
  • Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, awarded in August 2021 by the University of Stavanger on behalf of the European Commission. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters refer to advanced and comprehensive study programs offered at the master's level. These programs are meticulously crafted and administered by a collaborative network of international higher education institutions (HEIs). Scholarships are available to students worldwide on a merit/competitive basis.
  • University for All Program (ProUni) Recipient, awarded by The University of Vale do Itajai, on behalf of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. This scholarship provided coverage of all tuition fees at a private university in Brazil.

Education

Early-life and schooling

Erick was born into a poor, working-class family and grew up in a violent, impoverished neighborhood in the city of Camboriú, where he experienced several adverse childhood experiences, including his father's alcohol use disorder. He is the first child of a construction worker (his father) and a housekeeper (his mother). Despite all the challenges, he found refuge in books (both academic and non-academic), and he envisioned education as his way out of what was a quite turbulent upbringing. His mom's love and words of encouragement helped him navigate through the difficult times, and she always supported his academic endeavors. Neither of his parents has finished the fourth grade, and very few people in his extended family have finished high school, which makes him the first to attend university and to obtain an advanced degree. In his words: "Growing up deprived of many things has instilled in me a sense of justice, a duty to always fight for those who cannot often fight for themselves: this is my calling and purpose."[15]
