Erik Cambria is a computer scientist and academic. He is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, where he also holds the appointment of Provost Chair in Computer Science and Engineering.[1] He concurrently serves as a Visiting Professor at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[2]

Prior to entering academia full-time, Cambria worked in corporate research environments, holding research positions at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing and HP Labs India in Bangalore.[3] He joined the computing faculty at Nanyang Technological University in 2014, later transitioning into his current role within the newly established College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS).
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Cambria has transitioned components of his research into commercial ventures. Sentic computing and SenticNet
Cambria's primary theoretical contribution is the development of "sentic computing", an approach to natural language understanding that integrates knowledge representation and reasoning with deep learning architectures. This framework shifts away from traditional word-level sentiment analysis—which relies on bags-of-words or statistical word frequencies—toward concept-level analysis. Sentic computing leverages semantic networks to infer the underlying emotional meaning of multi-word concepts, even when explicit polarity words are absent.
Central to this research is SenticNet, an open framework pairing commonsense reasoning with affective primitives. First released in the early 2010s, SenticNet has evolved through numerous iterations. By 2024, SenticNet 8 introduced a neurosymbolic framework designed to enhance the explainability of sentiment analysis models by pairing sub-symbolic neural networks with symbolic logic graphs.[4] In 2026, SenticNet 9 expanded the framework into generative emotion AI by introducing conceptual primitive discovery and time-shift mechanisms to track shifting sentiments in dynamic text environments.[5]
Professional activities
Cambria has been actively involved in leadership roles within the affective computing and computational intelligence communities. He has served as an Associate Editor for several academic journals, including IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing, IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems, and Information Fusion. He is also routinely involved in major artificial intelligence conferences, serving as a program committee member and speaker for organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
