Erik Hedegaard (born July 24, 1954) is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine, profiling major entertainment and cultural figures there and elsewhere for over 30 years.
Early life and education[edit]
Hedegaard was born in Palo Alto, California, and taken as a child to Washington DC, where his maternal grandfather served as an assistant secretary of defense in the Eisenhower Administration.
Hedegaard attended semi-exclusive private schools, but being left-handed and dyslexic, and suffering from memory problems, he did poorly until finding teachers who encouraged him in his writing. He graduated from Washington and Lee and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing, fiction, at Columbia University.
Career[edit]
Between college and graduate school, Hedegaard lived in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he was an avid surfer and worked at a local weekly newspaper.
After receiving his MFA, Hedegaard joined “Rolling Stone” as an editorial assistant and fact checker in 1981. His first bylines included a review of a country-music record and a short item about heavy-metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne.
Hedegaard left “Rolling Stone” to work as an editor at several other publications, including Manhattan, inc., Us Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. He left editing to concentrate on writing, contributing to “Details”, “Outside”, “Men’s Journal”, and others.
He returned to “Rolling Stone” as a contributing editor, where he has written dozens of celebrity profiles, many of them cover stories. His full-length profile of Ozzy Osbourne was a National Magazine Award finalist in 2001. Hedegaard was the last journalist to see convicted murder-cult figure Charles Manson in person before he died.
Personal Life[edit]
Hedegaard is divorced and has one daughter. His memory problems have persisted and he has written about living with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.
