Ernst Fritz-Schubert

Ernst Fritz-Schubert (* 4. Juli 1948 in Fulda) is a German therapist, educator, philosopher and author. In 2007, he introduced the school subject “Happiness” at the Willy-Hellpach-Schule in Heidelberg. By now, the school subject “Happiness” has been taught in more than 100 schools in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. Ernst Fritz-Schubert is convinced that personality development needs to be reinforced in schools. Today he is the honorary director of the Fritz-Schubert-Institute in Heidelberg, Germany, which investigates and evolves methods of personality development.

Career

After his studies of economics and law at the University of Heidelberg (1972 – 1976), he chose a teaching profession and became head of the Willy-Hellpach-Schule in Heidelberg (2000 – 2011) where he introduced the school subject “Happiness” to the biennial vocational school and the commercial high school in 2007. Since 2009, he has been honorary director of the Fritz-Schubert-Institute for Personality Development GmbH (non-profit). On the initiative of Ernst Fritz-Schubert, Positive Education has been introduced as educational science in Germany in 2014. In step with actual practice, the concepts of positive psychology have been enhanced and implemented in the educational sector by the German Network of Positive Education. In 2016, Ernst Fritz-Schubert received a doctor’s degree (PhD) of the Department of Educational and Human Sciences of the University of Kassel for his graduate thesis on the school subject Happiness („Lernziel Wohlbefinden, Entwicklung des Konzeptes Schulfach Glück zur Operationalisierung und Realisierung gesundheits- und bildungsrelevanter Zielkategorien“). He is a university and college lecturer (University of Kassel, SRH University Heidelberg) and the author of numerous publications related to the subject of happiness and wellbeing. As a psychological advisor in sports and systemic therapist he has worked for various sports and health institutions.

Fritz-Schubert-Institute (non-profit)

On the basis of educational research and proven educational experience, the non-profit Fritz-Schubert-Institute (FSI) develops and teaches techniques of personality development and holistic wellbeing. In cooperation with several universities, the FSI investigates the effects of the techniques used. All activities and the basic principles of the development concept „Happiness“ refer to the United Nations General Assembly’s Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 according to which “mankind owes to the child the best it has to give … that he may have a happy childhood”. The Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989 states that ”the child, for the full and harmonious development of his or her personality, should grow up … in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.” All methods used in the professional training “school subject happiness”, the “development concept happiness”, and the respective educational practice have been peer-reviewed: Their basic principles are found in the Salutogenesis (Aaron Antonovsky), the principles of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy, the Systemic-Constructivist Approach of Education, positive psychology, the Consistency Theory (Klaus Grawe), motivation psychology, the PSI-Theory of Prof Julius Kuhl, and the research on psychological resilience. The most important project of the Fritz-Schubert-Institute is the dissemination of the school subject “Happiness” developed by Ernst Fritz-Schubert.
