Ernst Weigang

Prof. Dr. med. Ernst Weigang, MBA (born 1964 in Rottweil) is a German vascular surgeon and chief physician of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the Hubertus Evangelical Hospital in Berlin.

Career[edit]

Ernst Weigang studied human medicine at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Bonn, where he received his doctorate in 1997. During his studies, he completed an internship in cardiac and vascular surgery in the US. He began his further education in cardiac and vascular surgery at the Freiburg University Hospital. There he established and managed the interdisciplinary "Marfan Syndrome" working group. In 2004, he completed the requirements to specialise in cardiac surgery. Two years later, he completed the requirements to specialise in vascular surgery.

Until 2007, he was the head of the ambulatory vascular centre of the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital of Freiburg. There he served as a functional consultant surgeon and deputy head of aortic and endovascular vascular surgery. Since 2006, Ernst Weigang has been qualified as a professor for cardiac and vascular surgery. In 2009, he was appointed professor of the University of Freiburg and a certified endovascular specialist of the German Society of Vascular Surgery. From 2007 to 2013, he was managing senior physician at the cardiovascular and thoracic surgery clinic as well as section manager of endovascular surgery in the medical department at the University of Mainz. Since February 2013, Dr Weigang has been the Chief Physician of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy of the Berlin-Brandenburg Vascular Centre at the Hubertus Evangelical Hospital in Berlin.[1] [2]

Specialisation and treatment focus[edit]

Weigang focuses on minimally invasive vascular operations and interventions on all vessels and the main artery (aorta). To this end, in 2015, he founded the Aortic Centre within the Berlin-Brandenburg Vascular Centre at the Hubertus Evangelic Hospital. Other areas of interest are the surgery of the neck, shoulder, and arm vessels (including the carotid artery, subclavian artery, and brachial artery) as well as the surgery of peripheral vessels.[3]
