Erskine Oglesby Jr. (Born on April 24, year unknown)[1] is the current council chairman (2019-2020) of the Chattanooga City Council and represents District 7.[2] Ogelsby was elected to Chattanooga city council in April 2017 and represents Alton Park 1 & 2, Downtown 1 & 2, East Lake, and St. Elmo 1, all a part of district 7. Before entering into politics, Oglesby worked with several different non-profits and local organizations such as United Way, YMCA, and Salvation Army.[2] Oglesby has also worked in business and has served as a member on several councils and boards.[2]
Personal life[edit]
Erskine Oglesby was born in St. Louis Missouri and has since lived in Jackson, Tennessee, Houston Texas, Charlotte, North Carolina, Durham, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Boston, Massachusetts. He is married to Sheryl Oglesby and together they have two children, son Ryan, and a daughter Dominique, and 3 grandsons.[3] The family are members of the Resurrection Baptist Church.[2]
Education[edit]
Oglesby graduated from Tennessee State University as a student of the Meharry Medical College in Nashville Tennessee, in 1978 with a degree in Health Care Administration/Health Management.[4][1]
Early career[edit]
Oglesby has held several positions before serving as councilman. He served as the director of the Howard C. Gentry Athletic Complex at Tennessee State University for 10 years.[2] He later went on to work at Marriott Management Services as project manager in St. Louis and North Carolina.[2] He began his nonprofit work at the YMCA, holding several executive positions over the course of 10 years in Durham, NC, Boston, MA, Charlotte, NC and Jackson, MS.[3] Following the YMCA, he became the Associate Director for the Salvation Army in both Mississippi and Louisiana.[2]
Politics[edit]
Oglesby became involved with politics via his work at Southeast Tennessee Development District (SETDD) , where his work in marketing and business development was in partnership with local government.[5][2] During his time at SETDD from 2009 to 2013, he also worked as the Regional Disability Program Navigator.[2] Following his work with SETDD, he continued his work in the field of nonprofits and became the Associate Director for Corporate Engagement at United Way of Greater Chattanooga where he stayed until 2016.[4]
In 2015, Oglesby became the owner of an event planning and specialty linen rental business and founded Tablescapes of Chattanooga, LLC.[4]
In 2017, Oglesby was elected to the Chattanooga Council to represent District 7. This was Oglesby's first election and he successfully upset the incumbent councilman, Chris Anderson .[6]

The core goals of Erskine Oglesby's campaign pertained to economic development, revitalizing neighborhoods and dealing with economic inequity in those neighborhoods, creating stronger family programming, and addressing community policemen.[7][8]
