Ervin Malicdem
Ervin Malicdem (born 29 February 1980), also known as Schadow1 is a Filipino geographical mapping volunteer, technology enthusiast, and multimedia artist, known for his works on mapping advocacy through Philippine travel.
He writes in his travel and mapping advocacy resource for the Philippines called Schadow1 Expeditions where he keeps a journal of locations he travelled in the Philippines while mapping it. He also publishes a free, open source, regularly updated map of the Philippines based on OpenStreetMap data that can be loaded as a GPS-assisted navigation map on compatible Garmin devices.
The GPS map of the Philippines he compiles has been instrumental to efficient planning and delivery of relief operations by international humanitarian organizations during the Typhoon Haiyan crisis of 2013 in the Philippines. His contribution provided street-level accurate navigation map for the country right after the devastation from the typhoon.[1][2][3][4] The data from the map he produces is an end-product of crisis mappers to which he has supported and collaborated during the crisis.[5][6]
Life[edit]
Ervin Malicdem was born in Las Pinas, Philippines and attended De La Salle University and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde for Electronics and Communications Engineering and Multimedia Arts. His intern project with the college, a 3D animation short on a future-based, Philippine culture-inspired vehicles called Fiesta Karera has been noted as the First Philippine Animation festival winner on the 7th Philippine Graphic Expo in Pasay City.[7][8]
In the early 2000's, he had been involved in computer hardware modification through authoring modified BIOSes of workstation mainboards to enable hidden functionalities for additional performance.[9][10] Other related works on computing technology also includes putting up wireless internet meshing using Wi-Fi technology in his home village in 2004 and branded as Cyclone AirConnect;[11] although it was short-lived due to the arrival of more widespread 3G internet in the country.
His interest on mapping the Philippines started during the proliferation of Google Earth in 2004 as he was enticed with satellite imagery but was held back by inaccurate maps of his home town and low-resolution imagery. Having started early on mountain climbing at the age of 8 in Mount Banahaw, this has enabled him to combine mapping and travel; which eventually started his mapping advocacy for the Philippines.[12][13]
Since 2009, he has been in various mapping expeditions around the Philippines.[14] One of which is mapping the trail connecting Mount Marami and Mount Pico de Loro; piercing through the jungle of Palay-Palay Mataas na Gulod mountain range of Maragondon and Nasugbu.[15]
