Escape From Holland is a book written by Chris Hunt. It was completed in 2020 and published in the United Kingdom in a limited edition that year. It was subsequently revised and published in hardcover and paperback format for its First Edition on 3 March 2026 by Mile Away Publishing. The book is subtitled: “The dash for the last boat out of Holland in May 1940, a thrilling true story of football, ballet, journalism and war”.
Synopsis
The book tells the true story of the organisation of the British evacuation of Holland over the weekend of 10 May 1940 to 14 May 1940. It follows several groups of (mostly) British people who are either living, working or touring in neutral Holland when the Germans invade and it documents their attempts to catch the last British boat out of the country. These include the Sadler's Wells Ballet Company and numerous British football coaches working in the Netherlands.The final boat is SS Dotterel, a steamship owned by the British and Continental Steamship Company. The book also tells the background stories of many of the evacuees. These back stories include the formation of the Sadler’s Wells Ballet Company and the story behind the England v Germany football fixture in Berlin in 1930.
