Escape The Room Challenge is a real-life room escape experience located in West Chester Township, Ohio. Currently, Escape The Room Challenge features two escape rooms, with the ability to add an additional two room in the future. The three rooms currently featured are Esmeralda's Curse, Escape the Mob, and Double Agent Dilemma.[2]

History[edit]

Don Oeters, a successful businessman and owner of EnterTRAINment Junction, first heard about the concept of an escape room from his daughter Michelle. While traveling in Europe, she heard about the escape rooms there and told her father about this new form of entertainment. Oeters owned a small building near his EnterTRAINment Junction property and was looking for a use for it. He realized that a live escape room would be an excellent use of the property.[3]

Oeters utilized several of the talents that he had employed for EnterTRAINment Junction for creative and technical input, including Danny Craven - a well-known local costumer, designer, and set builder - to help create and write the escape room experiences. After several months of testing, research and development, and construction, Escape The Room Challenge opened to the public in April 2015.[4]

Rooms[edit]

Esmeralda's Curse[edit]

Esmeralda's Curse was one of the two initial rooms opened with Escape The Room Challenge in April 2015. It is currently rated as a 4 out of 4 in difficulty.

The storyline goes as follows: "Legend has it that Madame Rosa was the greatest fortune teller in a century. One day a stranger visited and she peered into the darkest of souls. Angered by the meeting, the stranger killed Madame Rosa. Because of her foresight, Madame Rosa knew she could not avoid her fate, but to gain her revenge she set a trap to steal her murder's soul. Unfortunately for Madame Rosa, the killer avoided the trap. Unfortunately for you, you just walked into it."

Esmeralda's Curse is themed to Madame Rosa's fortune telling parlor. Participants are challenged to acquire the final key to get out of the room before Esmeralda's Curse steals their souls forever. This room is the most difficult of Escape The Room Challenge's escape rooms and has a 15% to 20% escape rate.

Escape The Mob[edit]

Escape The Mob was the second room to open with Escape The Room Challenge in April 2015. It is currently rated as a 2 out of 4 in difficulty.

The storyline is as follows: It’s been in all the papers! Someone has been stealing expensive works of art. Rumor is that the Giganti Family is involved. Usually you are not interested in the news but now it seems a small statue, which has been in your family for hundreds of years, which you have loaned to the museum, is missing! Taken by the mob! A friend tells you that “word on the street” is that the stolen art is loaded in a truck at an old warehouse. Upon going to the warehouse, you find it unguarded. You and your friends decide to go in, and upon entering, you trip a silent alarm. The Giganti Family is one hour across town. You and your friends have one hour to enter the room, retrieve the priceless artifact, and get out before the mob shows up and you disappear.

Themed to the Giganti's shipping warehouse, Escape The Mob has the highest escape rate of all of Escape The Room Challenge's rooms with approximately a 30% escape rate. Utilizing a linear design for its puzzles, this room is excellent for a first time escape room experience.

Double Agent Dilemma[edit]

Double Agent Dilemma opened in early 2016 and boasted being one of the few escape rooms that centered around technology.[5] The story line is as follows: "The ETRC Agency has had their worst fears confirmed! There is a Double Agent in the Agency! You have been employed to go under cover in the agency and discover which one of the eight suspects is the double agent. Additionally, the double agent has planted a bomb in the agency. Your mission is to uncover the double agent and then disarm the bomb before it goes off and everything within a quarter mile is destroyed." This game has a capacity of up to 12 players and has a rating of 3 out of 4 in difficulty.

"Fourth Room"[edit]

Escape The Room Challenge will house a fourth room, however the name and theme have not been announced. It will open in 2016.
