Darren and Erin Lattimer (Jason Wiles and Sunny Mabrey) are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary. Darren takes Erin upstairs to their bedroom where he scolds her for wearing lipstick. He then spits on a tissue and wipes it off Erin's face and leaves. Outside in front of the pool, Darren catches Erin's daughter making out with her boyfriend Jake and angrily sends him away. Erin's marriage to Darren is rather miserable because he's rather abusive and controlling.
One night after the party, Darren finds out that Erin had spent $500 on something and demands to know what it is. Erin claims it was stuff for their son Charlie who is away at camp and needed them there. But Darren that it can't have been that much money, and so Erin tells it was the dress Amy was wearing at the anniversary party. Darren is furious as he had also paid for Erin's dress and realizes that his money was spent on two dresses which causes him to get mad at Erin and then hit her and throw her on the floor. She threatens to call the police but Darren points out that she doesn't stand the chance of doing so since he's a respected District Attorney.
Erin has lunch with her best friend Stacy Hanson (Courtney Henggeler) who is in town after having returned to California from Italy with her husband Jason. Stacy notices Erin's injury on her head and asks her what it is, while Erin initially tries to lie, Stacy sees through this and realizes that Darren hit her. She is appalled by this and tells Erin she can come to California where she and Jason are now living on his boat. That evening, Darren asks who she was out with and wants to know who it was but Erin refuses to tell and Darren hits her again. Having decided she's had enough of the marriage, she wants to end it, but Darren says no or he'll bury her and Amy.
The next day, before Darren leaves for work, Erin tells him that she had lunch with an acquaintance of his named Frieda, but later at work, Frieda calls Darren and tells him she never had lunch with Erin which shocks him. At home, Erin packs up bags, takes passports and does a few more things before getting into her car and taking off. Erin stops at the bank to pick up some money and goes off to pick up Amy and tells her that she's done with Darren and that he'll track them because he has installed Amber Alerts in their phones and so Erin throws Amy's phone out. They arrive at the camp to pick up Charlie and set off again and later stop at a store where Erin meets a guy named Wes. They stay at a motel for a while and then Wes offers to take them all to California after the car has been towed away by the police. He takes them all to California in his truck and down to the harbour where Jason and Stacy are. Darren packs a bag and a gun with him and removes his wedding ring. The friends prepare to go out in the evening to see fireworks, though in the middle of the fun, Amy has disappeared for a bit while going off to fetch some blankets, so Erin goes off to check. Erin goes to the boat and searches, but there is no sign of Amy. She then finds Darren on the boat and demands to know where Amy is, but Darren says he will not tell her and asks to give him his passport. Darren says they should go up and watch the fireworks like they used to and reveals where Amy is hidden. He shows her bound up and gagged and as he pulls Amy out, Erin pulls her daughter to her and hugs her.
Wes comes back and meets Stacy and wonders where Erin is. So he goes to check. Meanwhile on the boat, Darren tries to kill Erin, but she also threatens him by telling him that the passports are scanned and that Jason and Stacy will make them public. After pushing Darren into the water by whacking him with an oar, Wes shows up and Darren arrives behins him and tries to kill him by strangling him with a rope. Noticing Darren's gun, Erin picks it up and shoots Darren in the forehead. He is killed instantly.
In the end, everyone is living happily on the boat with Jason and Stacy having had a baby and Wes, Erin, Amy and Charlie are a family there too. Erin and Wes share a kiss as the movie ends.
