Asmahan Salemé (born February 15), known professionally as ESMA (with birth name Asmahan Shmeit), is a Canadian singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, actress and activist based in Toronto, Ontario.

Early life[edit]

ESMA was born Asmahan Shmeit in Edmonton, Alberta and relocated to Toronto, Ontario to pursue her music career. Both her parents immigrated to Canada to escape war, her mother, Rose Harb Shmeit from Syria and father, Walid Shmeit, from Lebanon. Her father named her after legendary Egyptian/Syrian singer, Asmahan. ESMA attributes her reason for becoming a performance after seeing Michael Jackson on television when she was 4 years old.[1]

ESMA studied Drama at the University of Alberta and has trained in numerous music genres from Jazz, Classical, Rhythm and blues, Pop and Musical Theatre. ESMA had her training under the supervision of celebrity vocal coach Elaine Overholt along with Shawn Mendes, Majid Jordan andFrancesco Yates. She also had training with Ron Anderson along with Adele, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson and Usher.

Career[edit]

In 2016, ESMA teamed up with Producer and DJ Kage becoming a female duo.[2] Prior to that, she worked in Los Angeles with a marketing company, A&R Worldwide and record producer Fingazz to release her debut single and extended play, Force of Nature.[3]

ESMA landed a sync deal with Emmy Award winning company Bunim/Murray Productions best known for Keeping Up With The Kardashians.[4] She has played at major music festivals such as Canadian Music Week and Honey Jam. She is a Honey Jam alumni sharing this title with Nelly Furtado and Melanie Fiona. She has been featured nationally on eTalk, a Canadian entertainment news show hosted by Ben Mulroney and Danielle Graham.[5]

ESMA is a Canada’s Music Incubator artist put on by management company Coalition Music.[6] Her music has been on Toronto hit station G98.7 FM, California Music Channel, OK TV Germany among others. Acts she has been associated with are Juno award winner Rich Kidd (Drake, Busta Rhymes, SonReal), Fingazz (Snoop Dogg, Karl Wolf), Marcus Kane (So So Def), Jadakiss, Karl Wolf, Jay Sean, Dru Hill, SisQo, LMFAO party rock crew, Danny Fernandes, JRDN and Kos and Dirty Radio.[7]

Artistry and activism[edit]

ESMA’s sound is a combination of Hip Hop, R&B, Pop and Middle Eastern instrumentation.

ESMA has supported numerous charities including Because I am a Girl, We Day, the Canadian Cancer Association and the Amanda Todd Legacy Fund. After the Suicide of Amanda Todd tragedy, she dedicated her single, Fall Back to the cause having all proceeds go to the Mental Health Awareness and Anti-bullying association.[8][9][10] She believes in equal rights for all genders, races and LGBTQ community.
