The Esports Awards is an annual ceremony celebrating achievements in the esports industry. Established in 2016, the shows are produced by the eponymous company, Esports Awards Ltd, a British company headquartered in London (UK).
History
The Esports Awards was created in 2016 and was initially named the “Esports Industry Awards”.[1] The award show is the only international gaming award ceremony that focuses specifically on the achievements of the esports scene.[2] Every year, the event welcomes professionals from the esports industry for the exclusive black-tie event. In 2022, guests included Nadeshot, Jason Lake, founder of Complexity Gaming, or Hungrybox.[3]
The Esports Awards offered general admission for the first time in 2019, when it moved to Arlington, Texas.[4] The event returned to Texas in 2021 after a one-year hiatus: the Esports Awards 2020 was not held in Arlington but was instead hosted virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The show has partnered with multiple streaming and broadcast services since its inception in a move to secure international viewership.[5]
The Esports Awards and its CEO, Michael Ashford, consider it important that the Esports Awards celebrate and present favourably all verticals of the esports culture. In 2022, categories awarded included Streamer of the Year,[6] Cosplayer of the Year[7] alongside more expected categories such as Esports PC Player of the year.[8]
In 2022, the Esports Awards moved to the Resorts World Theatre at Resorts World Las Vegas.[9] The Japanese luxury car brand, Lexus, became title sponsor.[10] Lexus had first been involved in 2019.[11] Other partners included Coca-Cola,[12] Roland or Amazon Music.[13] The show was presented by a group of 7 hosts representing the diversity of the esports industry:

Process
The Esports Awards judging process is one of the most stringent procedures of its kind.[citation needed]
The awarding process for each annual ceremony begins with the nominations received from the worldwide esports community through the awards website, with all nominations requiring basic information, category for the nominee, details of achievements and supporting materials. Nominations for all categories are open until a week before the finalists are announced.
The nominations are divided into six award groups, with each group having its own eligibility criteria:[14]
- Pro
- On-Air Talent
- Creative
- Industry
- Community
- Collegiate
The Esports Awards panel, which includes representatives from all verticals of the esports industry from tournament platforms to content creators, then compiles all public nominations to establish the Finalist shortlists for each award. Generally, panel members will request consideration for omitted nominees, ensuring a fair, unbiased and international coverage of the industry. The nominees are revealed throughout the year as the awards ceremony gets closer.[15]
Winners are determined by a blended vote between the panel (75%) and public voting (25%) via the awards website, except for the Community awards, which is 100% decided by public vote. Public voting closes two weeks before the Esports Awards Main Ceremony.[16]
In case of a tie between two or more finalists, the decision is transferred back to the public vote. If the tie persists, the winner is chosen by a second round of votes from the panel between the tied finalists.
