Esutoru Subprefecture was a subprefecture of Karafuto Prefecture, which was located in Sakhalin from 1907 to 1949.[citation needed] The capital of Karafuto Prefecture was Ōtomari, and the largest city was Toyohara.[citation needed] Other major cities included Esutoru in the north central region and Maoka in the south central region.[citation needed]

Esutoru Subprefecture is notable for being the birthplace of Hasegawa Katsutoshi, a former sekiwake sumo wrestler who fought under his own surname for his entire career.[citation needed] Hasegawa was born in the town of Chinnai (currently Krasnogorsk, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia) in the Esutoru Subprefecture of South Sakhalin (Karafuto Prefecture). He officially listed Hokkaido as his birthplace when joining professional sumo because Karafuto Prefecture (South Sakhalin) had become Russian territory.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Esutoru Subprefecture, which was part of Karafuto Prefecture in Japan, was based on fishing, forestry and agriculture, together with extraction of petroleum and coal. The paper industry and the charcoal production industry were well developed in the pre-war period. Esutoru Subprefecture was located in the north central region of Karafuto Prefecture. It was one of several towns and cities that made up Karafuto Prefecture, which had a population of 406,557 as of December 1941.

Population[edit]

The population of Esutoru Subprefecture in Karafuto Prefecture was over 400,000 people when the Soviet offensive began in early August 1945. Most were of Japanese or Korean extraction, though there was also a small White Russian community as well as some Ainu indigenous tribes. By the time of the ceasefire, approximately 100,000 people remained.
