Etan Comics is a Pan-African entertainment company based in Houston, Texas. The company is privately owned and is mainly known for publishing African comic book and graphic novels, created by an all-African team of creators.[1]It was founded by Beserat Debebe in 2018 in New Haven, Connecticut. Etan Comics has published a number of graphic novels inspired by African history and mythology including the first Ethiopian Superhero comics, HAWI & JEMBER.[2]
History[edit]
Etan Comics was founded in 2018 by founder and CEO Beserat Debebe to publish stories that connect Black and Brown kids with their African heritage. The company published Jember, the first Ethiopian superhero comic, in 2018. Jember is set in modern-day Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The story is inspired by East African history and mythology surrounding ancient Ethiopia and the Land of Punt.
In 2019, the company started using Kickstarter to finance the publication of the African fantasy series, Hawi. Hawi follows the story of a first-generation Ethiopian immigrant as she searches for her kidnapped mother in a fantasy world inspired by the Aksumite Empire. Hawi was cited on the BBC as the first Ethiopian-developed female superhero.[3][4] In 2020, Etan Comics graphic novels were shortlisted for “Best Graphic Novel” at the Nommo Awards.[5]
In 2021, the colorist of Hawi, Toyin Ajetunmobi, was shortlisted for "Best Colorist" at the Ringo Awards.[6][7] Etan Comics books are published in English and Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia.
