Ethan Matthew Hunt is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Mission: Impossible film series. He is portrayed by Tom Cruise. Ethan Hunt is a highly skilled field agent for the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), a secret government agency handling dangerous missions.

Mission: Impossible (1996)[edit]
In the first film, Hunt is part of an IMF team led by Jim Phelps (Jon Voight). During a mission in Prague, the team is ambushed, and Hunt is framed for the deaths of his teammates. He recruits disavowed agents to clear his name and uncover the real mole. In a climactic confrontation on a TGV train, Hunt stops the true culprit and secures crucial intelligence.
Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)[edit]
Hunt is tasked with retrieving the "Chimera" virus from rogue agent Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott). He infiltrates Ambrose's circle through Nyah Nordoff-Hall (Thandiwe Newton). Nordoff-Hall infects herself with the virus to save Hunt, who then manages to acquire the cure and eliminate Ambrose.
Mission: Impossible III (2006)[edit]
Hunt, now a semi-retired training officer, is called back to rescue a captured agent and track down arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Davian kidnaps Hunt's fiancée, Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan). With his team's help, Hunt saves Julia and kills Davian.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)[edit]
Hunt and his IMF team are framed for an attack on the Kremlin. Disavowed, they pursue former Soviet strategist Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist), who plans to start a nuclear war. Hunt stops Hendricks and clears the IMF's name.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)[edit]
Hunt uncovers the Syndicate, a rogue organization responsible for worldwide terrorist attacks. After going off-the-grid, he and his team capture Syndicate leader Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), redeeming the IMF's reputation.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)[edit]
An IMF mission goes awry, allowing a splinter group, the Apostles, to acquire plutonium cores. Hunt, working with CIA agent August Walker (Henry Cavill), uncovers Walker as a mole. Hunt stops Walker and Lane from detonating nuclear bombs, redeeming his and the IMF's reputation.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)[edit]
Hunt tracks down a key to stop a rogue AI known as The Entity. He confronts Gabriel, a terrorist allied with the Entity, who was responsible for the murder of Hunt's girlfriend Marie, leading him to become an IMF agent.

Hunt has appeared in the 1998 video game based on the first film, voiced by Kevin Bayliss,[2] and the 2003 video game Mission: Impossible – Operation Surma, voiced by Steve Blum. He also appears in Lego Dimensions, using archive recordings of Tom Cruise.
