Ethan Robert Long was born in Camp Hill, PA, on April 2nd 1968, in Holy Spirit Hospital (Now Penn State Health Holy Spirit Hospital) to P. Thomas Long, an architect, and Brenda Long (nee Clark), a nurse. Long is an illustrator, artist, and author with over 125 literary and animation credits.
Long's childhood artistic influences include the work of Charles M. Schulz, Walt Disney, Chuck Jones, Mort Walker as well as Hanna-Barbera cartoons. His favorite characters were Snoopy and Woodstock (Peanuts), Beetle Bailey, Daffy Duck and Quick Draw McGraw.
Long's family moved numerous times between Reading, PA (where he attended Robeson Elementary School in Birdsboro) and Camp Hill, but, in 1980, settled back in Camp Hill in the West Shore School District where he attended Lemoyne Middle School (now permanently closed) and Cedar Cliff High School.
In 1984 his family moved to Killingworth, CT where he attended Haddam-Killingworth High school in Higganum, CT.
College Years[edit]
In 1987 Long began attending Ringling School of Art and Design (now Ringling College of Art and Design), in Sarasota, FL.
In his years at Ringling, Long won two (2) prestigious Society of Illustrators (NY) scholarships and numerous awards.
In August 1991, Long married Natalie Shigley and began working as a high school teacher. The couple settled in Orlando in July 1997. They had one child, Katherine, in 1994. During that time, Long worked as a UPS truck loader and picture framer while building his freelance career.
In a single week in November 1997 Long's father had his first heart attack, his wife asked for a divorce, and he lost his job as a designer.
From 1991 to 1997, as a freelance illustrator, Long created significant volumes of illustration for the school publishing industry, which marked the beginning of his career in kids publishing.
In March 1998 Long was offered a job at Harcourt (publisher) in Orlando, Florida as a Grade 3 Reading Designer. This is where his career in children's publishing began. At Harcourt, he also met his future wife, Heather, who was working as a photo stylist.
