Ethnochemotherapy

Ethno-chemotherapy The scientific study of plant medicine that has ethnic connotations is referred to as Ethnomedicine[1]. The plants used by ethnic groups across the globe for care for patients are called Ethnobotanicals[2,3]. The use of chemical agents to treat disease is called Chemotherapy[4] and the chemical substances that are used in chemotherapy are often referred to as Chemotherapeutic agents[5,6]. This refers to drugs (as well as antibiotics)[7] which are employed in the treatment of infectious[8] and non-infectious diseases[9,10]. With no word to describe chemical agents used in ethnomedicine, I think it is safe and convenient to describe the use of plants chemicals or (herbal) products in treatment as “Ethnochemotherapy”[11,12]. Ethnochemotherapy[11,12] can then be defined as the use of chemical substances obtained from plants or plant products that are useful in traditional or herbal medicine to care for patients[11,12].
