Eugènie Jeanne Devolle, who went by Jeanne, was a laundry woman and the mother of Coco Chanel.[1]
Devolle had a brother named Marin. Their mother, a seamstress, died when they were children. Their father died when they were teens, leaving them as orphans.[2]
In 1881 or 1882, she met Albert Chanel, a traveling merchant who was her brother's tenant in Courpière. She became pregnant with Chanel's child, and he suddenly left in January 1882.[2] Devolle gave birth to a girl named Julie on 11 September 1882. Chanel acknowledged that Julie was his child, but refused to marry Devolle.[2]
She died in February 1895, at 32 years-old.[2]
