Professor Eugene Ch’ng FSA[1] is a computer scientist and artist specialising in digital cultural heritage, extended reality (XR), and computational culture.[2][3][4] He is the current Editor-in-Chief of PRESENCE: Virtual and Augmented Reality, published by MIT Press.[5] He is also the Dean of the School of Culture and Creativity at Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University and founding director of the Centre for Computational Culture and Heritage | NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute.
Ch’ng’s work focuses on the application of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, photogrammetry, and human–computer interaction to the documentation, reconstruction, and communication of cultural heritage. His research has been supported by funding bodies in the United Kingdom, Europe, and China, and has been presented through academic publications, museum collaborations, and public exhibitions.[6][7]
Academic career
University of Birmingham
Between 2011 and 2013, Ch’ng served as Innovations Director at the IBM Visual and Spatial Technology Centre and the Digital Humanities Hub at the University of Birmingham. In these roles, he led interdisciplinary research teams working on archaeological visualisation, simulation, and large-scale digital heritage infrastructure, contributing to early UK strategic initiatives in digital humanities and cultural computing.
University of Nottingham Ningbo China
From 2013 to 2023, Ch’ng held senior academic leadership roles at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, including Professor of Cultural Computing and Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange. From 2016 to 2023, he was founding director of the NVIDIA Joint-Lab on Mixed Reality, an NVIDIA Technology Centre focusing on XR, AI, and visualisation research for culture and heritage.
Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University
Ch’ng is currently Dean of the School of Culture and Creativity at Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University.[8] He founded and directs the Centre for Computational Culture and Heritage | NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute, which integrates artificial intelligence, XR technologies, and visual computing into heritage research, education, and industry collaboration.[9][10]
Research
Ch’ng’s research addresses the use of computational and immersive technologies in cultural heritage context. His work spans digital and virtual heritage, virtual and augmented reality, crowdsourced and AI-assisted photogrammetry, social and affective analytics, human–computer interaction, and museum innovation. His research emphasises interdisciplinary methods that combine scientific computing with cultural and humanities-based inquiry.
He has authored or co-authored more than 145 scholarly publications, including journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, and edited volumes, published across computing, heritage science, and human–computer interaction venues.[11]
Publications
Ch’ng has edited or contributed to several influential volumes on digital and visual heritage, including:
These works examine the application of scientific, computational, and immersive methods in archaeology, museums, and heritage research, and are used as reference texts in academic and professional contexts.
Editorial and professional service
Since 2018, Ch’ng has served as Editor-in-Chief of PRESENCE: Virtual and Augmented Reality, where he oversees editorial policy, special issues, and the international editorial board.[14] He has also served on editorial boards, programme committees, and governing bodies for international conferences and professional societies related to XR, digital heritage, and computational culture.
Public engagement
Ch’ng has curated or contributed to more than 40 international research exhibitions on digital heritage, art, and immersive technologies. His work has been presented at major public science and culture events, including the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and the British Science Festival.
He has appeared in broadcast media, including National Geographic Television and Channel 4’s Time Team, discussing the use of digital technologies in archaeological and heritage research.
