Eunic Ortiz
Comment: Wikipedia's notability standard is that running for office is not notable by itself and candidates don't get Wikipedia articles unless they are notable for some other reason. Has she written any scholarly papers of interest? —Anomalocaris (talk) 06:51, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Currently, she is running for election to the Florida State Senate District 18, which represents parts of Pinellas County. Ortiz is running to replace long-time Republican State Senator Jeff Brandes, who is term-limited after more than a decade. She is currently the Democratic nominee. Ortiz would be the first openly gay woman elected to the Florida State Senate if elected.
In addition to her run for Florida’s state senate, Ortiz is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida. Prior to her candidacy, she was the National Political Communications Director of the Service Employees International Union, and worked for the union for eight years. For nearly fifteen years, Ortiz has fought for LGBTQ+ rights, worker’s rights, health care, and progressive causes, including during her time as a communications manager at the New York City Council.
Background
Ortiz was born in Orlando, Florida, and raised in Pinellas County. She was raised by educators who previously served in the military. Ortiz graduated from Tarpon Springs High School in Pinellas County, simultaneously earning an Associate of Arts in Communications from St. Petersburg College through the County’s dual-enrollment program. Eunic Ortiz received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida, majoring in Broadcast Journalism. Ortiz covered several national stories on campus as a CNN Student Reporter, including the “Don’t Tase Me Bro” incident at a forum featuring then–U.S. Senator John Kerry. In 2012, Ortiz completed her Master’s from New York University, with her thesis focusing on how social media is a vital tool for government communication. She is of Puerto Rican and Irish heritage.
Since graduating from the University of Florida in 2008, Ortiz has worked in local government, policy, community organizing, and as an adjunct professor. She has organized actions around LGBTQ+ rights, worked to increase turnout among voters of color, and helped lead the successful campaign to pass the $15 minimum wage in Florida in 2020.
Ortiz is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida, teaching Ethics in Media.
Florida State Senate
On June 24, 2021, Ortiz announced her candidacy for the then 24th district of the Florida state senate. Through redistricting, the district number was later changed to 18. Ortiz decided to run for her hometown state senate seat due to the looming economic and housing crisis she saw her community and home state facing. She is currently the Democratic nominee. The Florida state senate, District 18 seat is a critical flip opportunity for Democrats. If successful, Ortiz would become the first openly gay woman elected to the Florida state senate. The election for the Florida state senate will occur on November 8, 2022.
