EuphonEast is a travel documentary/music reality show centered on the local music scenes across Bangladesh. Each episode of the show features a local musician from the area that the crew visits in search of music and folk lore. Their collaboration with musicians from different influences and backgrounds gives each song a fresh texture while maintaining the essence of the songs as they were originally written.

Origin

Bangladesh’s musical culture dates back thousands of years. The country’s rich history and diversity in the people has created hundreds of branches in music, spanning hundreds of genres as well as countless legendary musicians and philosophers. Although the cultural roots are strong, they are on the brink of extinction due to the lack of upkeep and proper record. Most of the folk songs have been carried across generations either verbally or through performances, with no written records. The aim of the show is to travel across Bangladesh, visit the roots of the music in each district, feature the local singers from remote locations and bring it to the general masses.

Rights

EuphonEast is a reality show and travel documentary with emphasis on local music. Credits are given to each performer with GrameenPhone holding the rights of distribution.

Season 1 (2016)

The first episode of season 1 was aired on the 24th of October 2016. The first season featured local musicians from across Sylhet, a major district in Bangladesh.

Episode 1- Amar ontoray, amarkolijay

This was filmed at the shrine of the late philosopher and mystic Durbin Sai in Sylhet. The episode features a song originally conceived by Durbin Sai, performed by his disciple Jamal Uddin Hassan Bannah who lives on site and rendered by Arafat Mohsin. “Amar Ontoray, amarkolijay” is a legendary folk song which talks about love, loss and longing for someone. These themes are quite prominent in a lot of Durbin Sai’s compositions.

Episode 2 – Shonar o pinjiraamar

Filmed at TanguarHaor, Sunamganj, the episode features the song “shonar o pinjiraamar” composed originally by Arkum Shah, performed by Surjolal Das and rendered by Arafat Mohsin. The song is a euphemism about losing a soulmate and the emotional devastation that follows.

Episode 3 – RongilaBaroi

This episode was filmed partially at an abandoned “Zamindar Bari” (Mansion of a Zamindar) and Baul Abdul Rahman’s homefront situated in Jolshuka, Baniachong, Hobiganj. The song “RongilaBaroi” was originally composed by the legendary Shah Abdul Karim, performed by his disciple Baul Abdur Rahman and rendered by Arafat Mohsin. This song talks about the tricks that god plays with mortal humans. The song is metaphorical with each word which talks about a mason playing games with his creations and the longing of the spirit to find and worship the divine power within each individual.
