European Association for Southeast Asian Studies
European Association for Southeast Asian Studies[edit]
The European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) is a scholarly, non-political, and non-profit professional association dedicated to stimulating scholarly cooperation within Europe in the field of Southeast Asian studies. Founded in 1992, EuroSEAS has its secretariat permanently based in Leiden. Its primary activity is organizing a biennial international conference that attracts specialists on Southeast Asia from around the world. While traditionally focused on the humanities and social sciences, EuroSEAS does not impose disciplinary barriers.[1]
Conference[edit]
EuroSEAS organizes a biennial conference hosted by a European university or research center. Previous conferences have been held in Leiden (1995), Hamburg (1998), London (2001), Paris (2004), Naples (2007), Gothenburg (2010), Lisbon (2013), Vienna (2015), Oxford (2017), Berlin (2019), and Olomouc (2021). The 12th conference is scheduled for June or July 2022 in Paris.
Masterclass[edit]
In addition to the biennial conference, EuroSEAS organizes PhD masterclasses, workshops, and other events. These masterclasses bring together promising young academics from various disciplines focusing on diverse topics related to Southeast Asia. PhD students present their research proposals or key thesis chapters and provide peer reviews of other candidates' projects. A panel of senior scholars, selected based on their expertise, offers constructive feedback on these presentations.[2]
Book Prizes[edit]
EuroSEAS awards two book prizes at its biennial conference: the EuroSEAS Humanities Book Prize and the EuroSEAS Social Science Book Prize.[3]
