European Association for Southeast Asian Studies

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) is a scholarly, non-political and non-profit professional association to stimulate scholarly cooperation within Europe in the field of Southeast Asian studies. EuroSEAS is founded in 1992 and its secretariat is permanently based in Leiden. Its main activity is the organization of a biennial international conference bringing together hundreds of specialists on Southeast Asia from all over the world. Traditionally, EuroSEAS members work primarily in the humanities and social sciences, but no disciplinary barriers are set.[1]

Conference[edit]

EuroSEAS hosts a biennial conference at a European university or research centre. So far, conferences were held respectively in Leiden (1995), Hamburg (1998), London (2001), Paris (2004), Naples (2007), Gothenburg (2010), Lisbon (2013), Vienna (2015), Oxford (2017), Berlin (2019), and Olomouc (2021). The 12th conference will be held in June or July 2022 in Paris.

Masterclass[edit]

Beside the biennial international conference, EuroSEAS organizes PhD masterclasses, workshops and other events. The PhD masterclass workshops bring together excellent young academics from a broad range of disciplines focusing on a diverse range of topics concerning Southeast Asia. The PhD students present their research proposal or a key chapter of their thesis and co-comment on another PhD candidates’ project. A panel of carefully selected senior scholars whose specialization correspond with the selected proposals will provide constructive feedback on the writings.[2]

Book Prizes[edit]

EuroSEAS awards two book prizes at its biennial conference - the EuroSEAS Humanities Book Prize and the EuroSEAS Social Science Book Prize.[3]
