Description and purpose
The European Climate Adaptation Platform Climate-ADAPT was launched in March 2012 as a joint initiative of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) and the European Environment Agency (EEA). The EEA maintains the platform, together with the European Topic Centre on Climate Change Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation (ETC/CCA).
The European Environment Agency supports the European Commission in its work as regards the decarbonisation and energy efficiency dimensions in different ways, including "maintaining and updating a database on Member States' mitigation policies and measures and the European Climate Adaptation Platform relating to impacts, vulnerabilities and adaptation to climate change"..[1]
Like other knowledge platforms,[2][3][4][5][6] Climate-ADAPT is intended to support Europe in adapting to climate change[7]. Its core audience are decision makers from the local to the EU levels and organisations supporting them[8]
Climate-ADAPT presents information and data on expected climatic changes, the vulnerability of regions and sectors, adaptation case studies, and adaptation options, adaptation planning tools, and EU policy. Decision[9] makers can use this information to assess impacts, vulnerability and risks, and implement the necessary measures to adapt to climate change.
Climate-ADAPT focuses on items of pan-European relevance and in the English language[10]. The platform provides links to documents, external sources of information, and different climate change adaptation platforms to enhance collaboration and knowledge transfer.
The latest European Union (EU) Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change – published in 2021 by the European Commission – mentions that “the Climate-ADAPT platform has become a key reference for knowledge on adaptation”. The Strategy mentions that “the European Commission will update and expand Climate-ADAPT as a source of knowledge on climate impacts and adaptation, including by federating various sources of information, and as a monitoring and reporting mechanism; establish a European climate and health observatory under Climate-ADAPT”. The observatory is meant to "better understand, anticipate and minimise the health threats caused by climate change"[11]
Structure
The main section of the Climate-ADAPT platform organises the information in different clusters: EU Policy; countries; transnational regions, cities; knowledge - including the European Climate and Health Observatory - and networks. The information is shared via articles, country-specific factsheets, case studies, use cases, webinars and conferences, and collaborative tools.
The platform includes a database that contains information that can be easily searched[12]. The database offers search filters (i.e.: Type of item such as publications, portals, tools, case studies, guidance documents, adaptation options, projects, and organizations; adaptation sectors, countries, etc.) and a free text search.
Contributors
Among the contributors of the platform are EU and EEA Member States; International organizations; city networks and Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy Europe; researchers; Directorate-Generals of the European Commission; Joint Research Centre.
Other stakeholders can submit adaptation data and research to the Climate-ADAPT database upon registration via an Eionet account.
