The European Cricket League (abbreviated as ECL) is a European club cricket tournament contested for the first time in July 2019. The first edition of the tournament – ECL19 - was held in July 2019 with eight European champion club teams at La Manga Club, Cartagena, Region of Murcia, Spain.[1][2] At ECL19, the domestic club champions of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia and Spain all competed for the chance to become club cricket’s European champions. Players from 18 different nations from all over Europe as well as from more traditional cricket-playing nations took part. The league has adopted the T10 format and was played over three days. Spain hosted the tournament, which was staged between July 29 and July 31 2019. [3]

Tournament Play / Broadcast at ECL19
Packing 17 matches into T10 format over three days, every match was televised live in Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia across a combination of broadcast, digital and social channels, including the newly-launched European Cricket Network.[5] Over 100 countries worldwide broadcast coverage including the UK, Australia, India, Middle East, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Turkey, Spain, USA, Canada and the Caribbean. Teams were split into two groups of four with matches being played on a round-robin basis in La Manga with the top two from each progressing to contest the semi-finals and final.
The current ECL title holders are V.O.C. Rotterdam of the Netherlands, who won the inaugural 2019 season, beating SG Findorff (Bremen) from Germany in the final. [6][7]

The 8 participant teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group went through to the second stage of the tournament.

Player of the Tournament at ECL19
Max O'Dowd of V.O.C. Rotterdam was awarded “Player of the Tournament” at the 2019 European Cricket League. O’Dowd scored 219 runs in five innings (2 not outs) at an average of 73 and strike rate of 263.86, including an undefeated 74 in the Final against SG Findorff. He also took four wickets in the tournament with his leg-break bowling with a best of 2-25 against Catalunya Cricket Club in the semi-final. O’Dowd is a current Netherlands international. ECL20
The second-staging of the European Cricket League – ECL20 - will be held from May 31 to June 7 2020 again at La Manga Club in Spain. Event organisers have increased the number of federations and eligible teams. [11]

ECL20 will feature 16 teams from 15 different countries, adding from the opening tournament (ECL19) teams from Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Finland plus champions clubs from Cricket Scotland, Cricket Ireland and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Founder
The league was founded in 2018 by Daniel Weston with eight official International Cricket Council member federations on board, namely Russia, Netherlands, France, Italy, Denmark, Romania, Spain and Germany. Event organisers plan to increase the number of federations and eligible teams for future tournaments.[12] [13]
ECL Board
Fellow ECL board members Frank Leenders and Thomas Klooz were both part of the marketing team of football’s UEFA Champions League. Leenders and Klooz both joined TEAM Marketing (Team Event and Media Marketing) http://www.team.ch in 1992 and played significant roles in the rebranding of the UEFA Champions League during its formative years. Leenders went on to become Managing Director and a member of the Board of Directors, while Klooz rose to become CEO of TEAM and was also on the Board of Directors.
ECL CEO Roger Feiner is a former Director of Broadcasting at FIFA from 1999-2002, responsible for the global TV rights and TV broadcasting of the FIFA Confederation Cup in Mexico in 1999 and the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan/Korea amongst others.[14] [15] [16] [17][18]
The European Cricket League has no connection with the Euro T20 Slam, a proposed tournament in Europe which was postponed a few weeks after the inaugural staging of the European Cricket League.
