European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry
The European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology is an independent non-profit association that supports the scientific advance and dissemination in the field of medicinal chemistry & chemical biology. Founded on December 19, 1969[1][2] and representing 26 scientific organisations from 24 European countries and over 7500 scientists, EFMC promotes the cooperation and encourages strong links between the national adhering organisations in order to deepen contacts and exchanges between medicinal chemists & chemical biologists in Europe and around the World.[3]
The EFMC is daily managed by the Executive Committee (EC) under the supervision of the Council. The EC consists of seven members: The President, the President Elect or the Past President, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and three additional members. The Council consists of the members of the EC and one delegate of each Adhering Organisation.
Aims and function
EFMC fulfils the objective of advancing the science of medicinal chemistry & chemical biology by organizing symposia and short courses, by sponsoring meetings and medicinal chemistry schools, by publishing on relevant topics and by conferring awards and prizes.
Its most important meeting is the biennial International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC-ISMC). These highly international symposia, with an average attendance of 1,200 delegates, attract a broad range of speakers and attendees from the pharmaceutical industry and academia. EFMC also holds the international symposium on Advances in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC-ASMC) and the Young Medicinal Chemists Symposium (EFMC-YMCS), and organises intensive short courses on specific topics in medicinal chemistry. EFMC also organises the Medicinal Chemistry Frontiers (MCF) as a joint venture with the ACS Medicinal Chemistry Division.[3]
An important part of its activities is sponsorship of national scientific meetings and Medicinal Chemistry Schools. EFMC also awards travel grants for younger scientists to attend EFMC symposia and schools.
It publishes the electronic newsletter MedChemWatch as well as the yearbook “Medicinal Chemistry in Europe” aiming to further develop contacts between medicinal chemists around the world.
EFMC also awards three major awards: the Nauta Pharmacochemistry Award for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology, the UCB-Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry and the Prous Institute-Overton and Meyer Award for New Technologies in Drug Discovery, which are given every two years for outstanding achievements in the field of Medicinal Chemistry.[1] From 2010 on, it established two new prizes to acknowledge the scientific accomplishments of young medicinal chemists, both in industry and academia.[4]

Events
EFMC-ISMC
EFMC has been organizing the EFMC-ISMC since the 1970s, although the roots of the conference series “International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry” go back to 1962. The European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC) is sponsor of this series of symposia, each of which is organised in a European city in collaboration with one or more EFMC National Adhering Organisation/s (NAO).
EFMC-ASMC
The European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC) and ChemBridge Corporation have been organising since 2004 the successful series of the International Symposium on Advances in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC-ASMC).
EFMC-ACSMEDI Medicinal Chemistry Frontiers
The Medicinal Chemistry Frontiers is co-organised on a biennial basis, as a collaboration between the ACS-MEDI (American Chemical Society - Medicinal Chemistry Division) and the EFMC (European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology). The goal of the symposium is to build and sustain bridges between the European and American Medicinal Chemistry Communities, and to showcase a specific region and its related Medicinal Chemistry activities to the participants.
EFMC-YMCS
The EFMC Young Medicinal Chemist Symposium is an initiative of the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC). This short symposium has the aims of creating a network of young European researchers in Medicinal Chemistry, stimulating them to share their scientific work with peers and inspiring leaders in the field, and creating competition and excellence in Medicinal Chemistry within Europe by selecting the European Champion in Medicinal Chemistry.
Short Course
The EFMC Short Courses are an initiative of the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC), established as a training tool for today’s medicinal chemists, especially young scientists.
The annual Short Course series started in 2009, addressing a broad range of selected topics such as Safety and Attrition, Principles of Molecular Recognition, PPIs, Modulation of Enzymes, Kinetic Perspective on Drug-Target Interactions and Peptides Therapeutics.
Awards
Nauta Pharmacochemistry Award for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology
The "Nauta Pharmacochemistry Award for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology" was established to honour the memory of Prof. Dr. W. Th. Nauta, whose activities have been very important for the advancement of Medicinal Chemistry in general, and the development of international organisational structures for this discipline.[6]
The Nauta Award acknowledges outstanding results of scientific research in the field of Medicinal Chemistry obtained by scientists without restriction regarding nationality. The award is given biennially and consists of a diploma, € 7.500 and an invitation to present a lecture at an EFMC-ISMC symposium.
UCB-Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry
The “UCB-Ehrlich Award for Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry” was established to acknowledge and recognise outstanding research in the field of Medicinal Chemistry in its broadest sense. The Award is given biennially and consists of a diploma, € 7.500 and an invitation to present a lecture at an EFMC-ISMC symposium.
The Award is open to any scientist whose age does not exceed 50 years on January 1st of the year during which the Award is to be presented.
Prous Institute-Overton and Meyer Award for New Technologies in Drug Discovery
The "Prous Institute-Overton and Meyer Award for New Technologies in Drug Discovery" was established to encourage innovation and investigation in technologies related to drug discovery. The Award is given biennially to acknowledge the discovery, evaluation or use of a new technology, and consists of a diploma, € 7.500 and an invitation to present a lecture at an EFMC-ISMC symposium.
Prizes
EFMC Prize for a Young Medicinal Chemist or Chemical Biologist in Academia & Industry
Launched in 2010 to acknowledge and recognise outstanding young medicinal chemists or chemical biologist (≤ 12 years after PhD) working in European industry and academia. The two Prizes are given annually and consist of a diploma, € 1.000 and an invitation for a short presentation at an EFMC symposium.
EFMC-YSN Prize
Launched in 2020 by the Young Scientists Network (YSN) of the EFMC to recognise a worthy European PhD student (or up to one year after PhD). The Prize consists of a diploma, a free registration and a 500€ travel grant to attend an EFMC symposium.
