The European Private Label Awards is an awards programme honouring innovation and excellence in private label/store brand product development. The annual awards are presented by European Supermarket Magazine (ESM), a pan-European publication for the grocery retail market.

History[edit]

The inaugural European Private Label Awards 2018 took place in November 2017, with the winners revealed in early 2018. The awards are presented to retailers and suppliers of private label products available in the European supermarket sector.

For the 2018 European Private Label Awards, participating judges included Loe Limpens, the co-founder of Dutch private-label design agency Yellow Dress Retail; Hermann Sievers, the former head of private-label strategy at German supermarket Edeka; André Michel, a partner at International Private Label Consult (IPLC); and Sebastiaan Schreijen, an industry analyst at RaboResearch Food & Agri (FAR), in the Netherlands.

The judging team also featured chefs and food experts, including Carlo Rubino, sous chef at Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud (two Michelin stars); Tommy Butler, executive head chef at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Dublin; and Suzie Koumarianos, proprietor of the Burlesque Baker.

Judges assessed the products at the Cooks Academy in Dublin.

For the 2019 European Private Label Awards, participating judges included André Michel, a partner at International Private Label Consult (IPLC); Malachy O'Connor, Ireland's representative at International Private Label Consult (IPLC); Hermann Sievers, the former head of private-label strategy at German supermarket Edeka; Loe Limpens, the co-founder of Dutch private-label design agency Yellow Dress Retail; and Sebastiaan Schreijen, an industry analyst in Consumer Foods at RaboResearch Food & Agri (FAR), in the Netherlands.

The judging team for 2019 also featured chefs and culinary experts such as Carlo Rubino, sous chef at Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud (two Michelin stars); Caoimhe Hanafin, The Shelbourne Hotel; Derek Reilly, ARAMARK; Susie Koumarianos, The Burlesque Baker; Emily Hourican, Hospitality Ireland; and Mark Kelly, European Supermarket Magazine.

The European Private Label Awards 2019 judging process was once again held at the Cooks Academy in Dublin.

Although these awards are for European entrants only, they are recognised worldwide, receiving press in America.[1], New Zealand[2] and Australia.[3]

Categories[edit]

The European Private Label Awards span awards across various grocery retail categories. These include Dairy Products, Convenience Foods, Ambient Grocery, Confectionery and Snacking, Alcoholic Beverages, Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Meat and Seafood, Non-Food Household, Non-Food Personal Care, Frozen Food, Pet Care, Tea, Coffee and Hot Drinks, and Free-From Foods.

Of the breadth of products across categories, Sebastiaan Schreijen of RaboResearch said, "Testing a couple of private-label products as a member of a jury, how hard can it be? Well, considering that European Supermarket Magazine (ESM) had gathered over 150 different private label products in twelve categories from food retailers across Europe, it took us nearly two full days to thoroughly try, compare, discuss, and judge each of the contestants."[4]

Process and selection of nominees[edit]

According to the awards website, all grocery retailers and producers of private-label products for the grocery retail industry are eligible to be nominated, including supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience stores, forecourts, discounters and associated retail formats. However, all products entered must be sold and available within the European market.

Entrants can nominate as many products as they wish, accompanied by an entry fee that corresponds to the number of products entered.

Judging process[edit]

European Supermarket Magazine nominates a team of private-label industry experts to judge the entries and spend two full days of product assessment.

Products are assessed by three criteria:

  1. Innovation (how innovative is the product, and does it stand out from other products in the marketplace?);
  2. Presentation (how well is the product showcased and highlighted?); and
  3. Taste (does it meet or surpass taste standards for a product in its category?).

Commenting on the judging process, Schreijen of Rabobank said, "Quality, taste, packaging, concept, user-friendliness, design, price point, and the like all need to match up to convince the jury and ultimately the customer."[4]

Winners of the 2019 European Private Label Awards[edit]

The judging for the awards took place late last year in Dublin, judged by a panel of international experts: André Michel and Malachy O’Connor, International Private Label Consult (IPLC); Hermann Sievers, SMK-Sales.com; Loe Limpens, Yellow Dress Retail; Sebastiaan Schreijen, RaboResearch Food & Agri (FAR); Carlo Rubino, Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud (two Michelin stars); Caoimhe Hanafin, the Shelbourne Hotel; Derek Reilly, Aramark; Suzie Koumarianos, the Burlesque Baker; Emily Hourican; Hospitality Ireland; and Mark Kelly, ESM: European Supermarket Magazine.

Schreijen from Rabobank commented in an article on this year's awards, "The difference from last year is striking. Last year’s edition was dominated by ‘free-from’. Almost every second entry could be labelled as ‘free-from’ in one way or another. In contrast, at the 2019 EPL Awards, the emphasis returned to taste. Even the couple of ‘free from’ applicants in this edition scored well on tastiness."[4]

Past Winners[edit]

Product winners of the 2018 contest included an extra virgin olive oil from Greece sold by ABVassilopoulos.[5][6]; German retailer Rewe's Feine Welt Gin, dubbed the 'Diamond of Marrakesh' [7]; and RAW Cakes from Belgium's Delhaize[8]. Six Norwegian private-label products were nominated [9], with Gullbygg Greek Yoghurt taking home the prize in the dairy products category [10]

A full list of previous winners is available on the ESM website.
